Nothing like Jolt's wedding, er, tomorrow, to light a fire under a wedding-shawl maker's ass! We're here in Houston and of course I was too busy to block Birch at home, so figured I could go about it in our hotel room. Actually it worked out well - since Birch is so large and we don't have that much space to do this kind of thing in our apartment.
I decided to go with The Harlot's method of lace blocking - threading the edges with string instead of blocking wires:

That actually was much less time consuming than I thought it would be. Then Birch took a bath in the hotel tub with a smidge of baby shampoo:

She was pinned right down on the hotel carpet:

Look how perfectly triangular she is - and a full 80" across!

A few miles of Birch for your viewing pleasure:

Look for a finished object in the next few days!
Posted by jess at March 10, 2006 6:16 PMyowza! that is one bitchin birch!
can't wait to see it modeled by the bride!
Posted by: kate at March 10, 2006 6:45 PMWow! And to think it will look at least ten times as lovely on the bride. Well done.
Posted by: holly at March 10, 2006 7:09 PMGorgeous, gorgeous Birch!! Looking forward to the "in action" shots. :)
Posted by: Chris at March 10, 2006 7:26 PMCool! I bet it's much easier to travel with the string method than a set of blocking wires too! hehe And how handy that they had a grid on the carpet. Be sure to post photos of the bride in her wedding shawl with those pretty blue eyes! She'll be so beautiful. :)
Posted by: Laura at March 10, 2006 7:30 PMBirch is gorgeous! Your friend is going to treasure this.

Posted by: teresa at March 10, 2006 8:28 PMHow funny...I so know what kind of hotel you are staying in...I recognize the soap!
Birch looks beautiful, Jess!
Posted by: Skylar at March 10, 2006 8:46 PMIt looks beautiful! I must say though, if you are fine with blocking anything on the FLOOR of a hotel room you shouldn't be worried about mattresses coming new/or run through a trial (which have to be tagged as used and disenfected anyway).
To each their own...
teri, who just finished antibacterial cleaning all my door knobs...
Posted by: teri at March 10, 2006 9:47 PMlooks great! can't wait to see it fully blocked and modelled off.
Posted by: Sandra at March 10, 2006 10:18 PMOh, my. Now I know why the string method didn't work for me last time. I tried to thread it through an already-wet shawl...now I feel kinda stupid.
Birch looks lovely, though.
Posted by: naomi at March 10, 2006 11:57 PMIt looks so beautiful! I'm dying to try knitting lace one of these days-- when I finish the other gazillion projects I keep thinking I'll do one day...

Posted by: Kym at March 12, 2006 4:26 PMBirch looks beautiful - I cant wait to see it in action! (And I'd love to hear the verdict on your mattress issue, I think mattress buying in NYC is a terrifying prospect.)
Posted by: MeBeth at March 12, 2006 8:26 PMoooh! Aaah!
very lovely
oh i love it! love the gorgeous, ethereal birch. and love that you're blocking it on your hotel floor with just a few hours to spare. glad i'm not the only one who finishes projects in the nick of time (when knitting my clapotis to wear to a friends' wedding last september, i had to hide outside the wedding tent for half an hour to sew in the ends and unravel the dropped stitches).
