Coming to Terms With Colchique

Remember me? I'm back from my sojourn in the bottom of Jessica's dresser:

colchique1
Pattern: Colchique, from Phildar Irlandais 2004
Yarn: School Products Cashmere, DK weight
Needles: US 5

Notes: Motivated by the first finished Colchique at the Colichique Knitalong, I've decided to confront the demons in my own little blue "pull." Forgive the grainy photos and the fact that the yarn ends are not, after months and months, woven in yet. I'm still deciding whether to keep Colchique. The problem? Check it:

colchiqueproblem

That's right. She's more than a tad loose. Perhaps I should keep her around for a maternity sweater? Seriously, I fear this sweater is going to stretch heinously after wear (especially if I keep pulling on it to demonstrate how huge it gets). It's big around the shoulders, too. I had been saving this yarn for a really special project - something simple yet unusual... but I just couldn't bear forcing this luxurious cashmere into the supertight gauge the pattern calls for. So we have a loose final product, a-duh.

I'll admit though, after putting her in a drawer for a couple of months, my disappointment with her has ebbed and I can see her better points. I like the neckline, and she's super cushy, soft, and very warm. I'm going to continue to think about whether to frog and use the yarn for something else. But maybe I'll weave in the ends in the meantime.

Hmm, if yer weaving in the ends, I'm thinking you're not frogging later. :)

I think it looks great - everyone needs a super cushy cozy oversized sweater.

I think it looks great when you're not inducing a preg belly! :) The ribs I think make it pull it a bit more than it would otherwise. Big, soft, cushy, warm, what else could you ask for!

PS - I have the same digi camera (LOVE IT) and prompted by your post, found the macro setting! Yipee!

but it has the most adorable photos of you in it...

if you dont love it cashmere deserves better if you do- wear it till you are pregnant and when you are pregnant too :)

It doesn't look bad from where I'm sitting, but if you're really unhappy with it and don't want to rip it, you could consider taking it to a reputable tailor and see if they can sew in the arm and side seams to tighten it up.

I think it looks pretty good from here, just more on the cozy side :) The fullness of the fabric is luscious, and the stitchwork beautiful. Wondering if some seweing trickery is what you need. You could take it in along the waist, ala a tutorial I believe I saw on Chic Knits blog.

I think it looks great! Just don't show everyone how big it is. =) I love the neckline, too. But if you really think it will stretch to the ends of the universe, I think you're better off frogging it.

Totally random questions, but what kind of jeans are you wearing?

Posted by: Angela at January 9, 2006 2:25 PM

Jess, except for where you're pulling on it, it looks good. I'd keep it and wear it, frogging only if and when it becomes a gigantic wool tent. :)

i personally thinks it looks great as well. The perfect sweater to throw on over jeans to meet your buddies for brunch in.

HOWEVER, the yarn you used for this project is awfully special stuff and I wouldn't want to use SP cashmere on an FO I was less than thrilled about, either.

BUT, frogging a sweater is frogging a sweater is frogging a sweater. :( It really hurts, no matter how you look at it.

Wow, I am really no help at all. Oh, well. Just do whatever feels right. :)

I think it looks great- and I think it's important to have a big, cosy, slouchy sweater in the wardrobe.
But that said, if it's not the kind of thing you feel comfortable wearing it, then it needs to be frogged (or perhaps gifted, if you have someone you love who' like it who's slightly larger).
So sad to frog something like this, but I hope you're a bit of a process knitter!!

Whoa! Cool sweater. I think I looked at it over at the -along site but it didn't strike me as cool there. Seriously very cool. It looks really great on you. I agree with the others...nice cozy sweater...sounds lovely!

dude, either reknit it or take it to a taylor. there's no sense in wasting your yarn or your time. That being said, I really like the way it looks (so see above)

Posted by: yahaira at January 9, 2006 7:55 PM

I like it, when you're not pulling it out of shape...

Posted by: naomi at January 9, 2006 8:41 PM

Gah! I forgot about colchique! I also forgot about my own...which is still about 5 inches of back...that's about it.

I think she's wonderful! It IS a bit big, but that's ok! School Products Cashmere! Come on! Winter = cold (ok, not this week)
Law student in barely heated brooklyn apartment = need to keep cosy cashmere sweater!

Wow. I guess I listen when people rant, huh?

Posted by: Julsey at January 9, 2006 9:24 PM

I would keep it- I think it looks cozy and (until you stretch it out), really doesn't look oversized at all.

Maybe it didn't come out exactly the way you hoped it would, but it still looks beautiful- and it's cashmere :)

What a beautiful pattern- you did a great job with it. I have to disagree slightly with everyone else's comments though. Although the sweater definitely looks great on you, and you could certainly get away with keeping it the way it is, I think it might be worth another go. Even though everyone absolutely does need a big, cushy sweater, I'm not sure this pattern is intended for that type of sweater. Plus, like someone else said above- if you're going to use beautiful, expensive cashmere yarn, make sure you love what you make with it!

Anyway, if you decide to keep it the way it is, it's still a beautiful sweater!

Well, getting knocked up is all the rage in blogland these days...but you're kinda busy with school. If it were mine and I thought the yarn could withstand it, I'd rip it out and make a smaller size. I have an entire Rowan sweater awaiting this treatment, alas. Something so special should also be something you truly love wearing.

Posted by: Sarah at January 9, 2006 11:05 PM

It's truly beautiful sweater. If I find the courage to knit it I will make one for myself. But I do understand your dilemma... How and where do you intend to use it? Do you want it to fit under a jacket, look cool while you sip espesso then I'd say your problem doesn't seem to exist (or you're a brilliant photografer ;) )
Can you bear to frog and reknit the Colchique all over again, or do you maybe have another project in mind for the cashmere?
Hell, I'm kind of envious of that sweater! :) Stockholm is brimming with snow. How much do you want for it?

From a distance it's a good looking sweater and the thought had crossed my mind to keep it when you'd fill it out better. The neckline does look smashing on you, though. But then again, frogging it and knitting it up again at a later time wouldn't be too crazy, now you know the pattern, right?

Posted by: Flare at January 10, 2006 7:16 AM

I think it looks really great on you - what a sexy little neckline with those buttons and your tank - love that. From the front, you cannot see how big it is at all. I say stick with it and wear it more, and then make the decision... I think it looks great!

Posted by: Lolly at January 10, 2006 11:17 AM

You look so adorable with that pouty face! I agree that the sweater looks rather lovely when you're not posing with it contorted.

Posted by: Gina at January 10, 2006 11:34 AM

Your sweater is pretty, you are pretty :)

Posted by: Alison at January 10, 2006 3:12 PM

I love the pattern, is it only available in French? If so... too bad!

Posted by: Jill at January 11, 2006 5:49 PM

Jessica, how frustrating and sad. Yes, you are tiny enough and cute enough to pull off anything and have it look good - but, you know that you probably have to rip this apart to ever be happy with it, or you wouldn't be asking for the affirmation would you? I do stuff like that.
Yes everyone needs a slouchy sweater - but this isnt' that pattern. This design would look so incredible on you as its meant to fit. And the cashmere - will it withstand the frogging and reknitting? If so, I'd rip it apart, use the cashmere for something better suited to its gauge, and if you can stand it, make another colchique in a lighter weight yarn.
BTW, I saw pics of your Lady Eleanor - gorgeous!

Hi there,
I'm surious: Did you decide to make it a turtleneck? I'm not there yet, but debating with myself whether or not to go there.

Posted by: Mia at January 13, 2006 5:22 AM

I mean that I am curious. Not surious (non-existing word I think?)

Posted by: Mia at January 13, 2006 5:23 AM

I think the sweater looks wonderful on you. Although I know it wasn't meant to be 'slouchy', I really like it as is.

The business loans seem to be useful for people, which are willing to start their organization. In fact, that's very comfortable to receive a short term loan.
