That's right, kids... it's a veritable mountain of yarn all ready to become my Union Square Market Pullover! After a fun day of yarn-shop-hopping with Ms. Heatherfeather who is in New York for a while, working at a Big Important Institution, we wound down our day at Purl. I have to say after getting such a great deal on my yarn for Simply Marilyn, and after today, I have warmed up to that place. Although the shop is tiny, it has one of the best selections in town and they always seem to stock precisely what I'm looking for. And Joelle and her peeps are actually pretty darned helpful, too. After reflection, I think it's Purl's weekday clientele, not the store, that gets under my skin - lots of yippy dogs and stay-at-home-Manhattan-moms and Ladies Who Lunch. Today, however, and I think Heather will back me up here, the store's center table was attended by opinionated and funny Women Who Knit, who enjoyed watching me fret over color choices while putting in their two cents. They were coolio.
Check out the other find found today:

Nifty, non? Picked up at the P.S. 321 antique market today for 40 smackers. We are assured that it works. Take that, Anthropologie!
(You may note that I'm here, blogging, at 11 on a Saturday night. You may also care to hear that I had plans tonight, but on my walk to the subway a rather large bird pooped on me. Yes. You heard right. I was pooped on. In my hair, on my shirt... it was pretty bad. So I just turned right around, went home for a shower, and stayed in for the night. It's the kind of thing one ought to take for an omen, maybe.)
Posted by jess at July 30, 2005 11:16 PMumm, actually I think it's supposed to be good luck if a bird poops on you. of course it's two in the morning and I could be totally wrong.
Im in love with the chandelier and the yarn
Posted by: yahaira at July 31, 2005 1:57 AMi love the gems opal! i used it for a scarf for my mom and it is so soft and springy! i hope you enjoy knitting with it, i am sure you will enjoy wearing it.
Posted by: holly at July 31, 2005 11:49 AMNice find at the antique market. Gee, sorry about the bird poop incident. :(
Posted by: chica at July 31, 2005 12:25 PMThat chandelier kicks major ass.
And whoever said that being crapped on by a bird was lucky obviously never had to contend with the skankiness that is the urban pigeon. My heartfelt sympathies.
Posted by: mindy at July 31, 2005 12:45 PMgorgeous lamp. why don't i ever find anything desirable like that? ugh for the bird poop, that'll kill any plans dead.
Posted by: anna at July 31, 2005 2:36 PMAwesome colors for the sweater. Awesome lamp - I wish I had it for my daughter's bedroom. Bird poop is crappy. I've never said, "Oh, you're so lucky to have been pooped on by that bird! I wish it was me!"
Posted by: Laura at July 31, 2005 3:09 PM"bird poop is crappy." lol. yes it is!
have you tried the lamp yet?
and the women at the table at purl were AWESOME. i loved the woman who steered you away from the darker "loden" colored yarn because she was so funny, and quite smart too!
Lamp = beautiful. And, you've won me over on your green/red combo. It's gorgeous.
Got the Suss pattern this weekend. It is differently constructed. One large rectangle, folded in half across the short side (cast on edge folded to meet bind off edge). The sides are sewn up (starting at cast on/bind off edges) leaving space near the fold line for armholes and one side having a non-sewn part an inch from the bottom edge for the buttonhole. It looks pretty nice on in the picture, but I'll have to try it before I really believe it. Also, it's one size fits all and pretty skimpy on the directions. Very disappointing for the price. I'll let you know how it goes, once I get the yarn and get knitting.
Posted by: julia at August 1, 2005 11:47 AMack! that chandelier a la anthropologie is so beautiful~sans the million dollar price, even better! have you got it working yet?
Posted by: jenny vorwaller at August 1, 2005 2:07 PMWhoa Jesse: I like to think of myself as an opinionated and funny (and smart!) woman who knits. I also happen to have been a stay-at-home mom, and I love nothing more than a good lunch with a womanfriend. Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought I picked up just a wee bit of judgement creeping into the narrative. You might have to keep that kind of commentary for your law school knitting circle. Re. the bird poop: In Japan they use Nightengale poop for facials (they have it at Ten Thousand Waves Spa in Santa Fe, too) to keep the geisha's complexion pure and white. I know, a subway pigeon isn't quite a Nightengale.........
Posted by: Sara at August 1, 2005 9:24 PMI love your blog!
And I can't wait to see how your purple Simply Marilyn turns out. I made a blue one for my sister, and it was such fun to knit. Gave me the confidence to look at more challenging sweater patterns. Yours will be gorgeous.
Beautiful chandelier.
Posted by: Martha at August 2, 2005 1:03 PMI live in Philly, so I get the whole urban pigeon thing and I hate them when I go to the shore. The lucky thing is just an old wives tale that I find funny, it's pretty obvious made up to make the pooped on person feel better :)
Posted by: yahaira at August 2, 2005 3:20 PMDroooooling over that lamp/chandelier. It's so very gorgeous! GREAT SCORE Jess!
Posted by: christine at August 2, 2005 5:21 PMLucky you! Good find. Good finds, plural, actually. I'll be waiting to hear what you think of the Gems Opal. I've been looking at it as a possible yarn for a couple of projects. I think that it'll be just the right thing and the colors selection seems pretty good but I haven't seen it in person yet. I'm curious how swatching will go for you(that is, if you're the swatching type).
Posted by: Siri at August 3, 2005 12:22 AMI am desperately jealous of your good find! wow! Once I was sitting outside eating a burrito and a bird pooped on that tiny little skin sort of where my thumb connects to my hand. How did that happen? What's the odds of that? Needless to say, I couldn't finish my burrito... eww. - Aime, http://boulderdirt.com/blogs/aimeemay/
