Jess: Crap!
Chris: Hm?
Jess: Dammit, I screwed something up in this sleeve! I did too many repeats at every 16 stitches. I'm going to have to rip back.
Chris: NO!!
Jess: ?
Chris: NO!!
Jess: Well, I want it to be right. Why are you getting so upset?
Chris: Do you want to get it right or do you want to BEAT LISA????
Jess: Get it right?
Chris: . . .
Jess: BEAT LISA!
Chris: I thought so!
Postscript: And that, friends, is what happens when boys get involved. In the end, there was backsliding: it was done right instead!
This is not a man thing. It's a born competitor thing. I know some women (like my mom) who would have wrestled it from me before letting me rip back.

Posted by: schrodinger at September 5, 2008 3:58 AM:) i'm loving this competition!
Posted by: gleek at September 5, 2008 8:27 AMmaybe if we found a way to make knitting more of a competition or made it into a contact sport somehow we might get more male knitters...? or at least they would maybe understand the "sticks and string" obsession?
Posted by: Lauren at September 5, 2008 9:02 AMHa ha! Chris sounds like he would be a great coach :)
Posted by: Veronique at September 5, 2008 9:09 AMTeam Fig and Plum is BRINGING IT! That's too funny.
Posted by: nancy at September 5, 2008 9:19 AMRant follows.
Oh, yeah. We want more boys and their sexist point of view in all activities, so that girls will feel second class and worthless. Why do you give these mini-mysoginists any slack? I hate when men invade a SnB. The sickening adulation and gooey comments by women who think it's so wonderful that "men knit!" disgust me. There are men who knit well. But more women are great designers -- and they don't start with a doily and engorge it to bedspread size. Beat Lisa, indeed.
Posted by: mimi at September 5, 2008 9:42 AMhahaha! the little diffrence between girls and boys ;)
loving your competiton!
That's hysterical! Clearly, he needs a Team Jess T-shirt.
Posted by: Julia at September 5, 2008 11:24 AMIts so cool that he is in on this one. And that he wants you to win! It's good partnership.
Posted by: knithoundbrooklyn at September 5, 2008 11:37 AMHAHAHAHAHA!! that was HI-larious. You have a coach, Lisa better get the same...
Posted by: Craptina at September 5, 2008 12:42 PMHAHAHAHAHA awesome! men connected with knitters know way more about our craft than they ever thought they would! :)
Posted by: Preita at September 5, 2008 1:17 PMsome of my favorite posts are the conversations knitters have with their beloved. they start to take it seriously and that it both awesome and a tad bit frightening. good luck.
Posted by: mamie at September 5, 2008 2:57 PMLOL!! I had a conversation like this with BK:
Me: Do you want me to cook chili on Sunday for football?
BK: Nah, we can just order in pizza.
Me: Really? I thought you wanted chili?
BK: No - you need to be knitting your sweater so you can beat Jess!
Seriously. True story.
