Tangled Yoke Cardigan: Swatch Me

Tangled Yoke Cardigan Swatches 001

The Tangled Yoke Cardigan [Ravelry] is finally swatched, thanks to The Point, which recently started carrying Felted Tweed [Ravelry] in a nice range of colors.* Can't say I wasn't tempted by all the lovely jewel tones - that purple! that red! But as with most cabled projects, light hues are probably best for making the cables pop. Eunny has good taste of course, and I chose the same colorway as she. The "Wheat" colorway is this lovely oat with flecks of black and lavender, which you might be able to see in the photo above.

I had to downsize to a US 4 to get stitch gauge, and I'm still just a wee bit off for row gauge, but like Lisa I'm going to let it go since this piece is largely stockinette.

* and thanks also to the crack team at Brooklyn General for supplying the needles when my 4s inexplicably disappeared.

Update: So after Gena wrote saying she'd had success using a US 3 needle (nice work, btw!), I thought it might not hurt to see if I got any closer using a US 3. Here are the results - US 3 is on bottom, US 4 on top:

Tangled Yoke Cardigan Swatches US 4 v. US 3

Row gauge was more accurate using the 3s (*almost* there). My stitch gauge was almost identical on both, but the fabric on the size 4 swatch is a softer, drapier and more elastic. The fabric on size 3s is a bit stiffer and a little rougher. I only steam blocked them, but I imagine with immersion blocking the size 4 swatch would stretch quite a bit and the size 3 swatch would smooth out somewhat. Plus I don't think this piece requires much drape. I'm thinking I'll go with the size 3s. I only wonder whether this is likely to create any problems at the yoke with bunching around the cables, etc.

Oh, and speaking of tangled yoke cardis - Ravelers, did you see this one in CASHMERE? Swoon!

you have great taste as well!
oooooh I see me making this in the light green I think a friday at the Point is in my future :)

This is going to be great! I don't think I've ever knit cables in anything other than lighter neutrals. They just look so dang good that way. I love this pattern. Can't wait to see more. :)

Yay! You and I can Yoke-along :) I *never* get row gauge with Eunny's patterns: not with the Deep V, not with the Anemoi Mitts, and not with this sweater. I haven't cast on yet because I can't seem to get my hands on a Fall interweave!

Wow, Jess, were you inside my head when writing this post? I cast on earlier this week for the TYC, in the Wheat colorway on 4s.

Guaranteed you'll finish yours before me, so I can't wait to see your progress.

Now to get out of work before 7pm on a Friday and make the trek to the Point to TYC-along with you and Lisa...

Gorgeous. I can't wait until I can start swatching... but I'm waiting for my yarn order to come in. I considered wheat as well, but finally opted for the clover option. I've been waiting for this pattern since I saw her first swatches on her blog ages ago. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

I do love the wheat color! My row gauge was off, too, and I had to knit mine on US 3s.

i have been eyeing this sweater too, in that color... i need to make it down to the point! i have just a week or so to go on the cobblestone sweater for e, then i will feel justified in starting something for me :)

This is going to be a real beauty, Jess. Great choice on the yarn. Cheers!

yay, I love Tangled Yoke! I think the yarn Eunny chose is perfect. Can't wait to see yours...

Love that tweed!

I'm swatching this today! I'm doing it in Rowan Wool Cotton (I live in CA where it's not too cold most of the time) in a deep chocolate brown. I'm so excited to start!!!

Gotta admire your conscientious approach to swatching Jess!

Looks great! I have yarn for this sweater but am finishing other projects and trying to overcome my first-sweater-anxiety. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Ah, swatching... You knit, you dream, you squint your eyes so a 4" square turns into an entire sweater... Looks like you're going to have a blast with this pattern!

I've been knitting this in cashmere in my head since I saw it. Who knows if it will ever make it to my needles.

Funny! I just swatched for this, too! Oddly enough I got gauge on the 5s. This is shocking, because I rarely ever get gauge using the 8right* sized needles. Looks like there are going to be quite a few TYCs out there soon! :) I'll have to check out the cashmere one...mmm...
