A week from tomorrow (!) we embark on our Big European Adventure: the mercury's up, the dollar's down, and we're ready for anything! We settled on spending our first week in Croatia (Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik to Split) and our second week in Italy (Chianti and a couple of days in Rome, to be precise). The big decisions are made. So now? I need a traveling project! Here's my last one: the Razor Cami*, which saw Morocco with me:

As Birch is about 4/5 done, and the goal is to finish before we leave, I need a new knit. I would normally choose a shawl, since it's lightweight and doesn't require seaming, but since I will have just completed Birch I'll likely be shawled out. So I need your help. To give you an idea of things on my to-knit list, here's my Ravelry queue**, which is in no particular order. None of those immediately leapt out at me, but hey, I am kind of dense. Opinions on these? And what has been *your* favorite traveling project?
* whoopsy, never posted a FO report for the Razor Cami! Better late than never - have to get on that.
** oh yeah, hey, I joined Ravelry. Everyone's already gone on and on about how wonderful it is - agreed 100%! I wonder what kind of impact it will have on the world of knitblogs - it's hard not to think that some folks will stop blogging altogether now that Ravelry fills their craft-logging needs. Some already have. Good thing? Bad thing? Neutral? Whaddayathink?
UPDATE: As for Blithe - Danged kits! How long do they take to arrive? If I ordered from Kim Hargreaves' site, would the kit arrive before 8/11?
Posted by jess at August 3, 2007 10:23 AM | TrackBacki like a lot of the things on your queue. I haven't knit Thermal yet, but I want to. It might be a good travelling project since it's fingering weight yarn, so the knitting of it might last you through your trip... otherwise, i like the polka purl dots. That's just a darn pretty sweater.
Can't wait to hear about your adventures. Have a great time!
Posted by: lekkercraft at August 3, 2007 11:31 AMBlithe and Polka Purl Dots look lightweight enough to take with you. And the Saturday Market Bag might come in handy if you do it on the plane ride over. Have a wonderful trip!
Posted by: Jenn at August 3, 2007 11:39 AMYou've got good stuff in your queue!
I would assume that you're not going to knit anything by Wenlan Chia, considering it's all on enormous needles! How about a sock? Or something that starts off with a lot of stockinette, like the Sugar Plum pullover? Also, I've been trying to convince people to knit Olga's red, double moss stitch, balloon sleeve cardigan that is on the cover of the soon-to-be released Sensual Knits, instead of the minimalist cardigan in this Fall's IK. Isn't it weird that 2 designers came up with almost identical ideas?! Magazine publishing is so much quicker than book publishing!
Why don't you take along a light weight sweater from the top down, no seaming, something like Bonne Maries patterns?
I think some people signed up for Ravelry because of the buzz, but won't end up using it. Like me. But I'm not a knit blogger, and lots of knit bloggers write about other things than knitting. I'm not sure if Ravelry is a place to write about those other things (honestly I haven't used it yet and probably never will).
Posted by: Melisa A. at August 3, 2007 12:07 PMOf your Ravelry queue, Thermal seems like a good idea. Socks, especially kneesocks, are also good travel projects--no seams.
If I knit fast enough that my knitblog were just FO posts, I could see Ravelry replacing it, but I don't think that's going to happen. ;) My favorite thing about Ravelry is being able to look at everyone else's versions of whatever pattern I'm considering.
Posted by: naomi at August 3, 2007 12:25 PMI agree that socks make good travel projects, in general, but they seem a little mundane for the Dalmatian coast, don't you think?? My vote is for Glee, or Blithe -- something you might be able to wear there, if you finish it, and not TOO much seaming.
As for Ravelry & blogging -- I think that it means that a blog is no longer the easiest way to catalogue and keep track of your projects. So for those who used their blogs mainly for that purpose, it makes sense to stop blogging, and that's okay. For the rest of us, it means we don't have to take up as much blog space with just ... describing. Leaves more room for reflecting on our projects, building community, goofing off. I think it's great.
Posted by: Stella at August 3, 2007 12:58 PMIt might be boring, but I always stick to socks when traveling. They're small, light and easy to pack, and since mine are usually plain or ribbed, easy to pick up or put down at a moment's notice.
I've also noticed that some of the knitting bloggers that I enjoy reading are posting less, which is a real bummer for those of us not on Ravelry yet!
Posted by: Jen at August 3, 2007 1:22 PMI really like the licorice whip - so much so I'm adding it to my queue for a someday knit :-)
have a great vacation!
Posted by: Karen at August 3, 2007 1:40 PMyou probably don't get mojo hd (not many people do unless you have an HD TV) but there was a great "three sheets" episode on drinking in croatia. i'm so jealous that you're going! after watching that episode, i totally wanted to go :)

Posted by: gleek at August 3, 2007 1:52 PMMy votes for good travel projects (great queue, btw!) go for Glee and the Saturday Market Bag. I like the non-seaming aspect of Glee, and it's a damn cute sweater. The Market Bag, well, for obvious reasons.
As for Ravelry, I'm with Stella. Ravelry is a great tool for cataloging and researching projects, but for a lot of us, there is something about writing a blog that is wholly different than just "this is my finished project." I think that the two compliment each other, at least in my case. My $0.02...
Posted by: Amanda at August 3, 2007 1:55 PMdude, you are one lucky chica. the mojo hd website currently has the full episode of three sheets: croatia. watch it now! i've already watched three times at home. it's the best.

Posted by: gleek at August 3, 2007 1:57 PMMy vote is for Blythe and a pair of mindless socks for day trips (hehe).
I agree with the above poster that Ravelry does afford one the opportunity to catalog, which does free up the blog for more reflection.
Posted by: Heather at August 3, 2007 2:00 PMi think either glee or the minimalist cardigan, since they are fairly small with simple construction.
and i friended you on ravelry. =D
Posted by: amy at August 3, 2007 2:20 PMI'd have to say socks or something seamless. I always have socks with me, traveling or not, because I can shove one in my purse and pull it out when the mood strikes or there's time to kill.
Have a great time on your trip! And tips or info on Dubrovnik will be much appreciated -- we're headed there in October as part of our honeymoon Mediterranean tour.
Posted by: Sarah at August 3, 2007 2:26 PMjaywalkers!
wha, they're not in your queue? what gives? *pouts*
i just think you should knit up those bed socks at least. you hardly have to carry around any yarn and the project only takes up a wee bit of room in your bag.
Posted by: Sandra at August 3, 2007 2:39 PMI like to travel with a sock project, myself. One with a nice, interesting pattern, but not too complicated. Hedera was a good one like that. But don't use dpns, do the magic loop with Addis--I break all of my dpns when I travel with them.
You guys have an amazing trip! Can't wait to see photos when you get back!
It's hard to say. I think I'd stay away from anything that's more than one color, as it just means extra yarn to worry about. Socks are always good but not always enough, you know?
I'd say pick any two projects, one you can do while carrying on a conversation, one that requires some thinking. Nothing that requires a chart; too fussy while travelling.
But what do I know?
Have a wonderful trip and take lots of pictures!
Posted by: jessie at August 3, 2007 5:34 PMI have to say that I think Thermal would be an excellent travel project--fingering weight yarn, easy pattern & easily memorized pattern repeat, knit in the round. There are some sleeve seaming issues, but other than that could be fun! Have a wonderful time!
Posted by: Sulafaye at August 3, 2007 5:43 PMI vote for Thermal. A head start on fall knitting.
Posted by: Emily at August 3, 2007 7:07 PMSocks. A few peeps have mentioned that they're boring, but the ones on your list sure aren't! I think they're a predictable choice - but of course there's plenty of good reasons why they are: portable, small, and best of all, since they don't require major finishing or blocking, you can wear the ones you finish on your trip!
Posted by: Margot at August 4, 2007 8:50 AMMy personal philosophy? Take boring. Whatever you find mind-numbing. When it's the only project (or one of two), in an exotic locale, it's great! When it's at home, sitting beside the yarn for more exciting projects, it's really hard to force yourself to do it.
Added bonus: boring usually equals repetitive and uncomplicated, which makes it less likely to be messed up since you are generally paying attention to something else.
Only you know what's boring to you!
Posted by: Jenna at August 4, 2007 9:50 AMI vote for saturday market bag and/or Polka dots.
Posted by: Carol at August 4, 2007 11:51 AMI love Ravelry! I also intedn to keep blogging though, because then I can still sprinkle my knitting obsession with talk of other things: like food, traveling, and other experiences. Ravelry is all about organization and ease of finding things for me, but isn't as personal as blogging has been. And, I'm addicted to comments when I have a FO! Ha.
For your trip: I love taking socks with me when traveling. They are small and portable, and very interesting. Why not nock out a pair or two on your queue? Second choices: Odessa hat and Peapod Baby set (again, small, portable and not too complicated).
Have fun!! Can't wait to hear about Croatia and see pics.
Posted by: Julia at August 4, 2007 1:19 PMi votw wicked - no seaming, I think. sure it's wool, and it'll be warm where you are, but think how happy you'll be whenyou get home and you can wear it in the NYC fall?
Posted by: gretchen at August 4, 2007 9:49 PMi can only personally speak for glee, and it would be a great travel knit since it's all stockinette/ all the time. but maybe wicked would be a little more fun? i forgot about your razor cami -- that was indeed a great traveling knit.
Posted by: carrie m at August 5, 2007 10:30 AMOooh, I think blithe would be fantastic to travel with (plus I LOVE that pattern), I hope it comes in time for you. I think glee could be good, but possibly too much to carry. I travelled with socks and orangina (which isn't on your list) but perfect travel knitting as it's plenty of knitting.
Posted by: schrodinger at August 5, 2007 4:26 PMoh i have the name of the rose on my "to read" list. so jealous you will be off to italy, enjoy your trip! post a review of the book, if you have time, you seem pretty busy!
Posted by: leslie at August 5, 2007 4:53 PMI think someone mentioned up there but how about Wicked? Then you can post about it and let me know how the pattern goes? I still haven't figured out what yarn I want to knit with for that pattern.
How can one get on Ravelry? It seems I've missed out on the boat...
Posted by: Aimee at August 5, 2007 7:15 PMi can't look at your ravelry queue (only 1,200 more people ahead of me!)
socks are always good because they fit into your bag and can be put down mid row, kid stuff is good, too.
make sure you eat white truffle sauce in italy. it is to DIE for.
I've wondered about the drop off in blogging that will happen because of Ravelry. I think bloggers who like to detail projects will continue to blog, because you can follow them along as the project grows. Time will tell!
Enjoy your trip!
Posted by: amanda at August 6, 2007 12:40 PMDitto the above commenters... FYI, for those who aren't in the Ravelry Beta test, we have no way to see your queue. Only 27 people ahead of me now, so hopefully soon... very soon....
Posted by: Sassy at August 6, 2007 12:52 PMI'll add a late vote for the Saturday Market Bag. Easy, no seaming and useful for carrying all the new stuff you'll want to buy.
Posted by: Dorothy at August 8, 2007 10:53 PMI absolutely love Ravelry too. I hope that more of the blogging moves to Ravelry because it makes it easier to find info, comments and opinions about individual projects with Ravelry. I'm glad to see you like it too!
Posted by: ana at August 13, 2007 2:03 PMI would love to be able to my knitting on an upc oming 14+ hr flight from Australia to America but I beleive that knitting needles are not allowed through security any more as they are classed as dangerous and could be used as weapons???
Is this true???
Has anyone flown out of Australia since the new rules come in and been allowed ot takeknitting on baord with them (not in there luggage in the hold but onboard hte aircraft)???
