So, like a few other folks out there I'm starting to think about holiday shopping. I'd like to do more of it on Etsy this year. Thing is, I find Etsy sort of overwhelming unless you have a particular shop or item in mind. It can also be difficult to browse because it always loads reaaallly slowly. But there's so much great stuff lurking there! So I thought I'd ask you seasoned Etsy shoppers: what are your favorite (non-yarn) Etsy shops?
My one and only Etsy experience was super - I bought this stylish, custom-made bag from Malisonian, whom I stumbled across on Flickr first. Now your turn...
Posted by jess at November 27, 2006 10:31 PM | TrackBackCheck out sulu-design for jewelry; she's got some gorgeous stuff - very sleek and modern yet playful.
Also, I love the black apple (by Emily from Inside a Black Apple) for her artwork and adorable dolls.
Oooh, and I almost forgot, LookWhatICanDo has some really fun and creative softies - truly inspired.
Yeah, I browse through etsy way too much.
Posted by: Maritza at November 27, 2006 11:01 PMI like MaryMo for cute hair bobbies and small sewn items. jlyarnworks has cute stitch markers.
Posted by: Kaitie Tee at November 27, 2006 11:31 PMOoh, what a good idea! I'm definitely going to be checking back on this comments list for more Etsy ideas myself.
I too have not bought many things on Etsy, just sock yarn from these two folks, both awesome:

Posted by: georgia at November 28, 2006 1:06 AMI have zero money to spare but I am repeat budget offender with the Black Apple. She has a great blog, and her work is amazing!
Posted by: Cirilia at November 28, 2006 1:08 AMhttp://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=11622
Posted by: Rosann at November 28, 2006 1:19 AMI adore Katrina Kaye. She makes really cool bags that are recycled Dutch Army bags and vintage Scandinavian fabrics. She also made my favorite little stuffed toy in the world ever, Barry.
I also love everything from The Black Apple. She mostly does original painting and prints. Lots of hedgehogs, which, of course, I love. I bought some of her elf girl hedgehog holiday cards!
Posted by: Noelle at November 28, 2006 3:14 AMi love "http://stopsandstarts.etsy.com">stops and starts - cute cute cute stuff, excellent turnaround.

Posted by: heatherfeather at November 28, 2006 3:34 AMi too love starts and stops. her stuff is the cuteset!
i also love adzuki.etsy.com. she makes ipod cases and messenger bags and pouches and stuff using the most gorgeous fabric. and her workmanship is flawless and so not flimsy.
and for jewelry, I love gemmafactrix.etsy.com. very gorgeous and affordable silver jewelry.
Posted by: Sandra at November 28, 2006 6:59 AMOh, Jess, what a great post! I'm bookmarking this for my own shopping. At the risk of draining my supply of my favorite notecards, I HIGHLY recommend Young&WithIt Industries. Here's the link. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=1173
Their stuff is fantastic. Gnomes! Penguins! Enjoy.
These comments are so helpful - I never know where to look on etsy! Now I'm afraid I'll start shopping for myself.
Posted by: MeBeth at November 28, 2006 8:26 AMI've only browsed on etsy, but these are the people whose work I look at the most often:
photoglassworks
bibbidibaubles
orchidranch (her orchids look beautiful!)
photobird
Happy shopping!
Laura
I love the screen printed t-shirts from Circular Accessories. They sell some of their stuff on eBay, too, if you're bargain hunting.

I can't wait to come back and browse through everyone's suggestions!
Posted by: jenna at November 28, 2006 8:40 AMTry sulu designs, the curious bird, wise craft by blair peters, the black apple, soulemama, simple sparrow, and I'll do a shameless promotion of my little-hyped etsy shop that has only one item in it right now, but it's a really stylish bag that you or others might like and there's more in the works - thatsillygirl etsy shop. There. Hope that was helpful!
I adore photoglassworks as well; another fave is Ling Glass -- she does delicate glass pendants with the soldered edges or with these lovely spirals and flourishes in silver, etc. I covet half her available inventory on any given day.
I also have ordered from and LOVE the pincushions of loosestring; I've also ordered a lovely pendant from pollyfusia.
I will explore some more and report back my findings! This is definitely a great post; I may have to do a compilation list, myself!
Posted by: Liz Cadorette at November 28, 2006 9:18 AMI guess I should clarify:
sulu designs - really incredible jewelry, plus she's an elementary school teacher, which I just lov
the curious bird - makes really cool obis, softies, bags, but I just realized she's not an etsy shop
wise craft - she makes some amazing bags, softies, and other things; she used to be in the design industry and has an incredible sense of style
soulemama - maks really cute bags, often from vintage materials
simple sparrow - makes come crocheted items, items for kids, good gift-type stuff
thatsillygirl - I have made only one bag, have some more in the works(I just got started on etsy so I'm feeling the waters), I also make notebook covers, and will add more stuff as I go.
Try Queenthings for jewlery, she's got some vintage peices that you'll be absolutely gaga for.
Posted by: Aimee at November 28, 2006 10:08 AMThe Black Apple! All time favorite!!!
Posted by: Anne Sheridan at November 28, 2006 10:32 AMTheFiberDenn - she does fabulous self striping sock yarns (and they really stripe well. check the blog for photos)
TigerLillyShop - she does stunning jewelry. Rings and earrings with intricately drawn images of flowers. Very reasonably priced.

I will be writing down other people's suggestions and checking them out though.

Posted by: Kelly at November 28, 2006 9:50 PMno way! I just posted a bunch of my favourite Etsy shops on my blog! Some have already been mentioned in previous comments, but a couple haven't. And, damn, it's going to be fun discovering a few more thanks to your post :)
Posted by: amanda at November 28, 2006 10:31 PMI have no suggestions, since I've not bought on esty, but had to say that bag is fantastic. I'm also glad you asked the question, now I get to check out the recommendations of others.
Posted by: schrodinger at November 29, 2006 9:26 AMcute bag! my fave etsy shop is tashamck

for yarn: sunshineyarns (must admit i'm biased because dani, the dyer, is in my Sn'B, but she and her yarns are both awesome), blackbunnyfibers, and yarnpirate. also, dave daniels here in boston used to sell on etsy but now has his own site, cabin cove mercantile which you should check out - his yarns are beautiful.
for bags: charmdesign - this woman is wonderful - her work is gorgeous and she is incredibly sweet - fantastic customer service.
enjoy! ~gabriella
Posted by: gabriella at November 29, 2006 6:43 PMI really like my cappuccino pincushion from betzwhite. I also got a little bird coin purse from her at a show at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
Posted by: Angela at November 29, 2006 8:55 PMFor guy gifts, this guy makes awesome art collages out of old comic books. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=97678
I saw his work at a Crafts Show (Crafty Bastards) in Washington DC.
Posted by: Oiyi at December 1, 2006 11:59 AMI notice more shops opening selling "Adult" art.
Much of it vulger. My only concern is they have stated in their terms of service this is not allowed. Also their press releases represent them as a arts and craft site not a homemade porn site. As a shopper I was put off when 2 of their treasuries feature not only porn but gross art like a women with a bloody tampon in her mouth. This art is far from what they show the general public. Its not a rare occurence but a trend that they are allowing this.I set up a blog to warn people this is not a family friendly crafts site.
