... two years in Texas and more than 5 years in New York haven't changed me that much:
You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."
What American accent do you have?

Oh and one more thing: GO BEARS!
Posted by jess at November 11, 2006 6:24 PM | TrackBackhey, i took that quiz a while back and it told me i had a philly accent. i don't get it. i've been to philly three times my entire life and i was only there for a few hours each time. huh. well, the thing did say that if i wasn't from philly then probably south jersey. so i guess that's right. but i swear i don't have any distinct accent. honest.
oh, and you meant, go GIANTS!, you see. not bears. thought i'd let you know.
Posted by: Sandra at November 11, 2006 8:27 PMIt took that quiz and got this: "North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.
Well, I thought they sounded funny in Fargo, but I am a Canadian - so I guess it's half right.
Posted by: Leanne at November 12, 2006 7:35 AMfunny.. it said the same thing about me.. but i dropped the whole "pop" affectation years ago :)
Posted by: gleek at November 12, 2006 9:37 AMMaybe Canadians from Eastern Canada sound like Fargo - but I haven't met any myself! And by Eastern I mean the coastal islands.
I took the test and was told I had a Midland Accent - which is no accent. Making my voice a good candidate for tv or radio.
I have always thought it odd that visiting Americans comment on our accent here (BC) yet we sound like everyone in movies or television. Strange things accents and the perception of accents.
Incidentally the test said my accent was from Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania. Funny 'cause the people I have met from such places sounded drawly to me!
Thanks for posting this fun test.
Posted by: Miss Scarlett at November 12, 2006 9:41 AMMine came up as "Midland," which is correct! And yes, GO BEARS!
Posted by: lisa at November 12, 2006 11:58 AMgrowing up in california, i've always assumed that we have no accents out here. and evidently, i DON'T have an accent because the test gave me midlands meaning, i have a middle america accent?
although i pick up accents ridiculously. in one sentence i can go from southern to boston to chicago in one fell swoop.
which i guess is my own form of accent - the fleeting transient one.
Posted by: heatherfeather at November 13, 2006 3:11 AMOr, if you happen to be as far away from home as I am....I get a LOT of "You're not from around here are you?" and apparently most of the Northwest edge of the continent think that North America ends at Chicago because I also get a lot of "You're from the east coast right?" SHEESH, and I also got the same result as you did little sister, which is not such a huge reach now is it?
Posted by: Dina at November 13, 2006 10:16 PMYes! A knitter after my own heart! GO BEARS! They are absolutely amazing this season.

Posted by: Mary at November 14, 2006 11:43 AMHei
This was fun. Turns out my accent is the same as yours, despite the fact that I'm Norvegian and have learned all my english in school. By the way, there is so much nice here.
Mine says I have a Philadelphia accent.... I'm actually English so guess that people from there must have the "least American" accents!
