Thanks to everyone who sent along good wishes for my first week back in the working world! Given the nature of my work and the fact that I do try to keep this blog relatively craft focused, you'll find the details of my worklife here will be quite sparse. I imagine it will be limited to the occasional random, neutral observation. Let's see what random, neutral work observations I can generate right now. Hm... #1: it is amazing how even though I'm doing nothing but sitting, when working at a desk I inevitably get hungry at 10:30 AM every day. And my stomach always growls the loudest at that particular time. Having an officemate makes this pretty entertaining for everyone involved; as my officemate is very sensible, she thinks the fact that I am hungry a mere hour and a half after sitting down at my desk is v.v. funny. #2: Many, many, many slightly tired, business-dressed women shop at the Anthropologie at Rockefeller Center between 7PM and 8PM. They (we?) pick up some whimsical dress and have an inner battle about whether they should get it even if it's not work-appropriate. My battles are still slightly different... I'm sure you can imagine my inner dialogue concerning this sweater (a work-appropriate one, incidentally), can you not?
Between the first week of job (four days, really) and going out of town for a family wedding tomorrow night through the weekend, I haven't had time or focus enough for a single stitch since Sunday.

I feel kinda bad about my lack of Zimmermania participation, but it was not unanticipated. Anyway, the clock is now running on the Circle of Friends Blanket. Taking into account the time on the plane and the fact that we won't see its recipient until Sunday afternoon, it looks like I can juuuust make it if I (gasp! a terrible habit, I'm told...) block it in our hotel. I'm off to pack now, and musn't forget all those balls of Shine!
Posted by jess at September 27, 2006 8:36 PM | TrackBackI must be slow or something- I thought you started work next week. Do you like it? Is it what you expected?
Posted by: Kym at September 27, 2006 9:57 PMThanks for that link to Shine. What great colors, and it seems like it's got to be super soft.
And that blanket you're making looks really cool. Good luck with what sounds like a hectic road ahead!
Posted by: Dr. B. at September 27, 2006 10:13 PMI have that conversation with myself ALL the time!!! And you know, stupid me, I usually don't buy the cute sweater. As though I'll ever have the time to knit it!
Posted by: grumperina at September 27, 2006 10:41 PMHmm, I wonder if you have enough merino/cashmere from School Products to make the Anthropologie cardie...
Don't stress too much this weekend!
That sweater is TOTALLY cute.. of course you know what a lot of knitters are going to say about that.. You can make it! But why, when its so much more time efficient to buy it! ;) That's worth at least a day's worth of work (at work, not knitting work)!
Posted by: Angela at September 27, 2006 10:48 PMGood luck! You can do it! =)
Posted by: Julia at September 27, 2006 11:51 PMYou could so totally knit that. I'd put long sleeves on it, myself.
Posted by: Kristin at September 28, 2006 12:41 AMI can totally relate to the 7 o'clock anthropologie problem, although I never really gave a crap whether what I was wearing was work appropriate (haha, I worked at a newspaper, so only the chumps at a certain un-nameable gossip column dressed up for work there). Let's just put it this way: someone's kid came into work with them and accused me of looking like a schoolgirl for wearing knee socks. What the hell does she know, anyway?
Posted by: andrea at September 28, 2006 2:37 AMI concur. you can totally make that. but there is something about immediate gratification, especially cashmere gratification, that is great. ($300 great...hmm....did you check the label to see what country it was made in? that would sway me.) to add more to the list knitter have to do, someone should start an anthropologie-knock-off kal and remake all their fabuloso sweaters....
Posted by: kate at September 28, 2006 7:37 AMHey, do you eat protein in the morning? I used to not, and got hungry right away. I put a scoop of protein powder on my cereal...not too glamorous but it actually lasts me 4 hours now.
Posted by: Jen Showalter at September 28, 2006 8:00 AMthat blanket is going to be super cute. the parents are going to love it!
i'm a big fan of this anthropologie sweater..

it's a little too expensive though :(
have a good time on your trip!
Posted by: gleek at September 28, 2006 8:07 AMMy stomach growls at exactly 9:30 every morning. 2.5 hours after I arrive at my desk and 3 hours before lunch. I literally have to bring a snack. Like in kindergarten. Might I suggest Cheez-Its?
Posted by: jenna at September 28, 2006 9:19 AMAh, the mid-morning munchies. Keep a little stash of granola bars or some yogurts in the fridge for a snack!
Have a great time at the wedding - see you soon!
Posted by: lisa at September 28, 2006 9:27 AMI've really enjoyed watching your progress on the baby blanket - a good friend and I are about to undertake this project and I think we might end up at that tick-tock stage, too. :) Good luck!
Posted by: wenders at September 28, 2006 10:47 AMMaybe put a sheet down on the hotel floor for the blocking? I'd imagine this will quiet the fears of your blogging friends. The things I have heard men say that they do on hotel room floors....
The blanket is gorgeous--or it's going to be very soon! And that sweater... "downy cables" is all I had to hear. Have a fabulous weekend!
you could totally knit that sweater...it would look fabulous on you!
i get hungry in the morning too. (all the time, really.) time for snacks!
Posted by: carol at September 28, 2006 2:51 PMI heartily believe in a little "second breakfast"!
Posted by: Delica at September 29, 2006 11:41 AMGood luck with the blanket!
I never seem to be able to make it from breakfast to lunch without a mid-point pick me up too.
Posted by: Dorothy B at September 29, 2006 2:02 PMHi Jess! Have been reading your site for a little while - it's a great one. I think someone (cough, blogging knitters, cough cough) should put a pattern together for that anthropologie sweater. We put enough heads together, I'm sure we can get it - come on, people! Good luck with the new job and the breakfast woes (I, too, never make it to noon at my desk, unless I down some coffee first thing...and I'm not sure that's better). ~Gabriella
Posted by: gabriella at September 29, 2006 8:36 PMhey! an official wecome-to-the-fold from a fellow rock ctr. region lawyer and anthropologie devotee. perhaps i'll see you by those frilly dresses one of these evenings ...
cheers!
I always have those kinds of conversations with myself. That sweater is lovely btw, however, I could never afford a 300$ sweater. My college girl sensibilities wouldn't allow it ^_^
Posted by: Heather at September 30, 2006 10:09 AMHi Jess,
I can't seem to login to the Zimmermania blog - could you send me an invite again?
sorry!
Posted by: meg at October 1, 2006 8:54 AMnothing like waiting til the last minute! i have a terrible habit of doing crazy things like that too. good luck!
Posted by: melissa at October 2, 2006 7:26 PMOooh :) That sweater is lovely. I love how the ribbon 'pops' against the heather wool. Though, admittedly, I would turn it down claiming "heck, i could knit that" and then never would :-p
Posted by: emily elizabeth at October 4, 2006 9:49 AMHey, can you please remove my last name from the comment above? Thanks very much!
