In the end the bed is super comfy, and we didn't want to mess around with testing latex toppers and such, and knew we weren't yet ready for a latex mattress (for no particular reason, I guess). We are both droolingly anticipating its delivery, which will be in about a week and a half. I think we got a great deal. The comparable mattress + box spring at Sleepy's was listed at almost $1300 before delivery - funny since you can buy the original, branded mattress from Westin for $1200 with shipping included. I had the guy talked down to $1000 before delivery and tax, but still, come ON. We paid $850 total (with mattress, box spring, shipping, white glove delivery, and tax) for the exact. same. mattress (from Sweet Dreams Mattress in North Carolina, incidentally, NOT Sleepy's, and no haggling was required). Plus the Sleepy's guy kept talking about the warranty like it was easy as pie to enforce, even though it's widely known that mattress warranties are practically meaningless. No surprise when you look at Sleepy's record at the Better Business Bureau. [BTW, check out the details of that lawsuit in NJ. Go NJ Consumer Affairs! They also went after Blockbuster for their misleading pseudo-Netflix program, you know, the one where there were "no late fees" but if you kept the movie for a week or so you had to BUY the DVD. Oh, and NY also sued them. A tangent: do you remember the show "Fight Back! With David Horowitz"? A classic.]. Anyway, thanks once again for your mattress advice, everyone!

My first piece of grown-up furniture was a Simmons beauty rest for about $800. Now its the guest bed (hubby had an even fancier mattress set when we finally combined households) and we just bought ourselves similar sheets at Overstock.

Plan to spend that first day it comes in bed, with that mattress and those sheets you won't want to get up.

(PS I like reading your blog because it reminds me of when I lived in NYC.)

Congrats on the well-negotiated mattress purchase. You guys will be sleeping snug as bugs in a rug on that sucker.

omg, thank you! Just last weekend I said to bf I need to make rhubarb compote, and though it's not rocket science I forgot about amounts and cooking time and such.
I'm glad you found a mattress you love, and such a great price!

i totally remember "fight back." in fact, perhaps it explains my career choice and desire to challenge authority, or at least my desire to yell at spokespeople. i have no tolerance for bureaucratic double talk.

great random links, btw.

That dog is a supermodel! (The rockstar hat is my favorite--understated, elegant...;P [http://www.flickr.com/photos/ichiko-wanwan/162119181/in/set-72157594154691626/])

Also, d'you think she means "imagining" or is "imaging" a craft technique (don't see why not..;)).

Oh my God, that dog! She seems remarkably OK with her headgear, though--I wish my dog were so accomodating!

heehee, the boy and i have been stalking "ah munna eatchoo" for ages now. we've also been using the phrase for the last six months as both random threat and term of endearment. totally confuses any bystanders, though.
