Calla Gets Wabi-Sabitastic

Um... oops!

oops

Do you see it?

This is what you get for working on aran cabling a few rows at a time, weeks apart, when you're stressed out and busy. Not only do you make mistakes, but you don't see them for, oh, two or three pattern repeats. And lemme tellya, that makes you feel smart, s-m-r-t, as they say. If you still haven't seen it, look four diamonds up from the bottom in the center panel.

So I'm going to be a little wabi-sabi about this mistake, and let it go. It's not so obvious, it's not structural, and since the back and front of Calla are identical, I'll just make this the back. If there is a reason that's a bad idea that I'm not thinking of, pipe up. Otherwise, get ready to let the imperfection wash over you.

Calla should be finished this week. Saun writes her patterns in the French style - succinct and generally clear, except I do find myself fudging a bit on the armhole decreases when they begin to run into the more complex parts of the pattern, like the yarn overs and the cables. It seems to all be working out anyhow, though. Now if the NYC weather would just cooperate and emerge from the 50s, Calla could actually debut in not too long!

After Calla it's on to the Circle of Friends baby blanket from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I don't think the recipient reads Fig and Plum, so I'll just tell you I'll be collaborating with a Teach For America friend or two for another dear TFA friend who's having her first kidlet. We're using Knitpicks Shine, which is a wee bit smaller gauge than the Wool Cotton called for, but we liked the sport weight colors much better than the worsted. I'll post the yarn when it arrives, which it should in a day or so.

And for anyone interested (I've been told by two people now that they just "skip over these parts"), here is some meager Apartment Therapy progress:

You know, i don't know that i'd fix it either. Even though i have selectively reknit ill-fated (the mind, it will wander) cable-crossings on the aran i've been working on, at the end i left one as it was because i just didn't think it was that big of a deal. Although i must say that being able to just drop those center 4 or 6 stitches back to the problem point and rework the cables correctly was incredibly empowering (as overused as that word is) and even fun to an extent. That still doesn't mean that i think it is needed all the time.

Calla looks good, I bet the temps will get there soon enough for her to be admired!

It took me a long time to see it... And I had to stare really really hard to get it!

Oh goodness - I would have NEVER noticed that little mistake unless you pointed it out! Make it the back and move on. No one will ever notice! It's looking fabulous!

Knitpicks carries Shine in worsted weight as well!

I'd never have noticed the mistake either! And no one else will, esp. on your back.
And I never skip the Apt. Therapy bits--who isn't totally fascinated by how other people decorate their apartments?!?

What's that stupid saying about a horse? I think that applies too. I like it, it's on my "to knit but probly won't" list.

Posted by: Julia at May 15, 2006 4:43 PM

if it doesn't affect your stitch count or anything structural, i say leave it. it's beyond minute.

i appreciate the apartment therapy entries -- i have my own cord octopus that is driving me mad.

i looked really hard, but couldn't find the mistake. then i counted 4 up and still couldn't see it. then i saw it, but seriously no biggie. it'll be on the back, no one should be looking at you that hard anyway! letting go is hard, but you'll get over it!

Nothing wrong with some meager progress!

I think that I would leave the cable. It's only one--call it a design accident.

Your Calla looks great and the only people who might possibly notice are O.C.D. knitters. I had to scroll up and down then give my head a shake before I found the difference.
Your nasturtium is pretty and they are quite tasty. I like to add them to spinach salad with raspberry vinagarette. Balances the sweetness with a bite of pepper.
Your wire octopus could be solved reasonably easily and cheaply. Get a wood box large enough to hold everything inside when it is standing on it's longest side. Paint or stain the whole thing including the bottom. Use a drill (get attachments that allow you to make quite large holes and this project will be much neater) and drill holes into one of the long sides, make sure they are a good size. Now slide all your stuff into it and thread the cord ends up through the holes leaving the mess inside the box. Put the box up against the wall so the open side is facing the wall and the bottom is facing out. Voila! No more visible mess.

I should mention that some home improvement places will rent you tools instead of having to purchase them.

I looked at every inch of that picture and couldn't find the mistake until you pointed it out. Don't worry about it!! It looks great- no one will notice.

Hey, aren't you graduating this month?

I Love your naturtium plant, it will really bring some life to the fire escape. And nasturtiums are really spreading and trailing, neat! I love how the sweater's coming, too.

It is only a small mistake and you are the only one who knows about it, right? ;) No one will stare at your back for long enough to notice when your beautiful Calla is finished.
I find your Apartment Therapy stuff inspiring. Please continue and my place will look better too.

I've never posted a comment in here, but I read your blog on a regular basis and my husband and I are obsessed with the stories about your apartment. We live in Brooklyn as well and have to laugh everytime your landlord ignores something that ours has let go - we have a giant hole in the ceiling over our shower that drips everytime the tenant above us takes a shower. He fixed it by cutting out the ceiling and re-patching it... 3 weeks later, it's dripping and falling into our tub again!

Also - I REALLY had to look to see the mistake, and once it's being worn, someone would have to look even harder to find it.

Posted by: Catrina at May 16, 2006 11:09 AM

I vote leave it too. You can hardly tell it's there. Or, can you incorporate the twist into the design, maybe repeat the twist throughout the pattern?

I had to look hard before I noticed it as well. Knowing me and my OCD tendencies, I would probably rip it out b/c the one. little. mistake. would nag at me forever. But honestly I doubt anyone but a knitter would notice it, and even then it's not a glaring mistake. Looking fwd to seeing Kitty Pi and Catty!

Posted by: Joie at May 16, 2006 1:53 PM

I didn't notice it until you pointed it out, if that helps. :)

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 6:55 PM

I'll be a broken record and echo what everyone else has said: your mistake is not at all noticeable. To be honest I still can't see it and I've been staring at it for 10 minutes now! I think it looks great so far!

I have to say that I've been reading your blog for a while now and I love it! My boyfriend and I saw you and Chris while in Park Slope one night and I had to resist the urge to stop you and ask you about your knitting projects.

By the way, I actually enjoy reading about your apartment therapy adventures, so please don't stop posting about those (I'm not of those people who skip it):).

Hey, the mistake just goes proves that it's hand made. I think the medieval tapestry makesrs would always put an intentional miniscule error in there just to prove this point--so leaving it in is the thing to do! It's beautiful, I love cables and agree that coming back to a project weeks later can often have this result. But it's lovely nonetheless!

Love that pattern so much...what are you knitting your Calla with? It's really pretty, HEather.
