One Paw, One Sock

We don't know how to thank you enough for all your warmth and encouragement about Catty. You might have noticed that normally I don't go into much detail about personal stuff, but this time I'm (both Chris and I are, actually) really happy I did. Things are looking up, in part, thanks to your support. Thank you.

And in that spirit, I give you ...

catty's paw's last stand
Catty's Left Paw's Last Stand

Get out your hankies and wave adieu to the paw on the right-hand side of the screen, the one she isn't putting weight into. Bye-bye, offending limb!

When she returns, it will take all my strength to avoid asking her, every five minutes: Were you in the shit? Then answering myself in Catty-voice, yeah, I was in the shit.

Just, you know, keeping it in perspective. Right? She'll be back in a day or two, as soon as she's comfortable enough to get around without hurting herself. Meanwhile, Moses is here staring at me as if to say "I'mboredI'mboredI'mbored. Bring back the object of my torment!"

But enough about Catty. Well, okay, one more thing about Catty. Like with all my knitting, she has lately taken a shine to sleeping on my current work in progress, Les Jaywalkers. So to send along a familiar smell to the vet with her, I tossed the first Jaywalker in her carrier when we took her to the vet this morning. Kind of funny, right? One mismatched sock for a cat with one mismatched front paw. In any case I think you'll agree that sending Jaywalker the First with her is dedication, no? Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

jaywalker part deux

Look how far Jaywalker, Part Deux has come! Since I completed a draft of my A-paper, I've been allowed to do a few other things such as bathe, blink, stand up from my desk. Also I've been able to knit here and there, and I predict this Jaywalker will be complete by the time the other one returns from its mission at the vet.

Two things are lined up next on the needles. First, who among you is not dying to cast on for Saun's fabulous Calla tank pattern from the latest MagKnits? I'm such a fan of her work - she's going to be big stuff someday. Anyway, if I get time this week the plan is to pick up some Svale to begin this. Calla has jumped to the front of the queue. Second, I've scrapped the Kitty Pi I was working on before, since I doubt I had enough Patons Classic Merino to make it thick and large enough. Instead I ordered two skeins of Big Kureyon #12 from Little Knits, where it's on sale 50% off. Consider yourself enabled (did I mention 50% off?).

So that's what's fit to print this morning. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for your kind words about Catty. We love her a lot, and it's wonderful to know there are so many people out there rooting for her. Thank you.

All of my best to Catty. I think your words here and in your last post about her were the sweetest things I've read in a while. So lucky for her to have you!

(and nice sock, btw)

There's nothing like the smell of home to make the scary vet's office a little nicer. I'm glad Jaywalker #1 went along for the ride. #2 is looking great and I do love that tank.

I'm sure Catty will be fine. Our vet's "clinic cat" only has her front legs - no back legs, and only a little stump of a tail. She milks all of the attention she can get. We will definitely be thinking of her, and you.

Posted by: beth at April 18, 2006 12:04 PM

I'll be thinking of your kitty and I'm sending wishes for a quick recovery!

Posted by: Julie at April 18, 2006 12:12 PM

I'm so sorry to hear about Catty's leg. I am sure she will be fine and will be thrilled with all the love and attention you will certainly shower her with.

Posted by: SimplySara at April 18, 2006 12:18 PM

I've been reading your blog for a while - in fact some of your knitting inspired me to try myself and I completed my first sweater this weekend (so thank you!). I just wanted to say that I'll be thinking of you and Catty. I grew up with eight cats in the house - and they were a big part of our family. I'll keep my fingers crossed for Catty's speedy recovery.

Posted by: Charmouth at April 18, 2006 12:31 PM

Oh, Jess...poor Catty. How sweet of you to send along your Jaywalker to comfort her. As for Calla, it is most beautiful. I'm trying to stay focus on two baby projects and my Green Gable, but Calla calls out with a sweet siren song.

Posted by: Gina at April 18, 2006 12:36 PM

Sending nice thoughts to you and Catty! A few years ago, Bear had a tumor surgically removed from his back. I know what you're going through. Hang in there!

Posted by: Bear Knits at April 18, 2006 12:40 PM

Catty is super lucky to have such caring owners like you and Chris, he is going to be just fine. I know this is all very heart-breaking right now but as an owner of a three-legged cat myself, i can assure you that Catty is going to be back to his old self in no time. Look at that face, such a brave little soul.

Posted by: Sandra at April 18, 2006 12:43 PM

Sending many, many positive vibes towards Catty. She's going to be the most unique cat on the block!

Posted by: delia at April 18, 2006 12:43 PM

I love that you sent jaywalker #1 along with her!! Such a sweet gesture!

Posted by: Leah at April 18, 2006 12:49 PM

Nothing will delurk me like a cat in need of good thoughts! Sending all the best to Catty and her humans.

Posted by: anne at April 18, 2006 1:07 PM

You don't know me....I'm a lurker, but I just wanted to send along a well-wishing e-mail. I have a cat that only has three legs. Her name is Martha (when we aren't calling her Tripod or Handi-Cat--don't worry...she can laugh at herself). She happens to be the light of my life, and she gets along just fine! Yeah, three-legged cats!!

My best wishes for Catty's recovery and good health. You know what they say about cats and their nine lives! :-)

Posted by: Beth S. at April 18, 2006 1:19 PM

My heart goes out to you and your cat. I just had to put down one of my kitties so I understand the connection. It should all go well I have seen many amputee kitties leave my father's vet hospital and live long healthy lives. good luck

Posted by: Amy at April 18, 2006 1:49 PM

Best of luck to Catty, she sounds like a fabulous girl and I know she'll be just fine.

cheers . .

My best wishes to Catty. Hopefully things will turn out great and she'll be back to being tormented in no time.

Posted by: Casey Goldsmith at April 18, 2006 2:40 PM

All my best to Catty, and to you and Chris, during this stressful time. I was a nervous wreck when my dog was injured, and I can't imagine dealing with an amputation. You have such strength! Being a cat, I'm sure that Catty will take it all in stride (no pun intended!).

Posted by: Amanda at April 18, 2006 3:12 PM

I'm so sorry about your kitty--I hope she fares well during her sugery and recovers quickly. I find the three nonverbal pet members of my household the most lovable, often, and I live with three humans.

Best wishes to all of you.

Posted by: Heels at April 18, 2006 4:57 PM

Aww, poor kitty.

Many, many, many good thoughts for Catty during her hard times. I hope everything turns out all right.

Our thoughts are with Catty. That sock will make the vet a lot less scary. Chris (and Chaos)

Posted by: Chris at April 18, 2006 9:36 PM

Best wishes for little Catty! Nothing is worse than watching a beloved pet going through any kind of pain--but she will bounce back in no time, they always do. And all of her sweet dreams will no doubt be of her newly aquired handknit sock!

Posted by: Jessica at April 18, 2006 10:03 PM

I am so sorry to here about Catty. I'm sending healing wishes. We had a tripod kitty (he came that way when he was 5 or so--I don't know how he became a tripod) and he was with us for 13 years. He got around pretty good, climbed trees and all (in his younger days). A very grumpy dude, maybe mad about his leg, maybe not:) You guys are doing your best for her. Despite her illness right now, she's one of the lucky pets in the world--she's got caring humans. She knows it and that will help her come through it all. Hang in there.

sorry to hear about Catty. Cats are very storng creatures, I'm sure she'll be fine.

BTW - Love the Jaywalker yarn!!!

My best wishes to Catty- don't worry, she's tough. She's a New Yorker too :)

Posted by: Kym at April 19, 2006 12:17 AM

Goodbye tumor, and good luck Catty! I hope her surgery goes well and that's the last you ever see of the cancer.

Posted by: spaazlicious at April 19, 2006 12:23 AM

Oh - I am so sorry to hear about Catty. What a shame. I am sure that she will make a full recovery - clearly she is much loved.

BTW - I LOVE Rushmore!

Take care

Give Catty my best wishes! And nuzzles and what not, too, of course! I hope everything is going well.

Add me to the list of poeple wishing your dear little Catty well!

Posted by: Wendy at April 19, 2006 7:44 AM

Big hugs to catty! If she's like her mommy, she's a tough coookie. :)

Hi there,

This is an actual 'long time listener, first time caller' moment -- as a beginning knitter, I've found your posts inspiring, and as a mid-20 yr old lass, I enjoy and relate to what you write about.

I wanted to send my very best wishes your way for Catty. I've got a lotta faith in vet med and the strength that animals have and give and I know that Catty is going to be just fine! I'll be thinking about her.

YT,

Erika.
a fan :)

I am a day late on this, so I apologize. In the ways of the LA gangs, I think we should pour a little cheap malt beverage on the floor for our poor Catty's leg. "Here's one for the homey." But seriously, I am so sorry about Catty. I am happy there is some good news in that it hasn't spread. The kitties at Villa De Knitaholics are saying their kitty prayers every night for Miss Catty.

Posted by: Skylar at April 19, 2006 1:53 PM

I'm really sorry about Catty, but the prognosis looks good for her! Your jaywalker is amazing.

Posted by: katie at April 19, 2006 2:37 PM

I haven't been around much so I missed this awful news. My thoughts and prayers are with Catty as well as you and Chris. Pumpkin sends many healing chirps and says that even as a tripod, she's quite the dishy feline!

Posted by: Debi at April 19, 2006 2:47 PM

Best wishes for Catty! At the vet my mom takes her cats to there is a resident feline with only three paws. They named him Isosceles, which is so geeky but so adorable. Anyways... We're knitting Jaywalker together! I'm about to start the second sock.

Posted by: Cathy at April 19, 2006 3:02 PM

Hug and kiss Catty for me. I'm going to go get a tissue now because I'm a little weepy after reading the post I missed yesterday.

I can just see her all cuddled up with that Jaywalker. You are a good cat mommy.

Posted by: Sarah at April 19, 2006 3:16 PM

Aww, poor Catty. I wonder if perhaps you could knit her a little set of Jaywalkers of her very own? (Maybe not to wear, cos that could be creepy, but you never know...)

Posted by: The Skirt at April 19, 2006 4:47 PM

Oh Jess! I am so sorry I've been away from the blogosphere for so dang long. I am so sad about Catty's paw, but I love your super trooper attitude. It will help keep your sweet girl going when she gets back and adjusts to being a very cool 3-footer. And that you let Jaywalker accompany her is a true testament of dedication and love. Hugs to you and Catty!

Posted by: Giao at April 19, 2006 6:22 PM

Good luck, Catty! I wish you speedy recovery.

I am trying so hard not to cry.

Posted by: oiyi at April 20, 2006 12:15 AM

My best wishes to Catty--sending lots of positive thoughts to you and her. We just lost our second cat--he ran away in the middle of Oklahoma while Chris was driving everything from Minnesota to Texas.

Posted by: Lisa at April 20, 2006 11:14 AM

How's Catty doing??????? Is she home yet?

(BTW - Rushmore's such an awesome film!)

Posted by: Caren at April 20, 2006 4:15 PM

Catty cat is so lucky to have such a loving family. And a sassy jaywalker sock to keep her company. I wish her the best! I love my furry beast so much, so I can only imagine how scary this is for you, but I'm sure it will come out fine!
