I bet you thought I'd never finish anything ever again. You'd only be half right.

I've finished half of something, anyway! Here's Jaywalker, Part One. What an ingenious pattern! Chris will tell you how many times I busted out with "Grumperina is just so smart!" while working on Part One. My only concern is elasticity, but this has less to do with the socks than with my bizarre tootsies. I downsized the pattern to a 6-stitch repeat to fit my ubernarrow feet, and they're still not all that snug. Time will tell, but I can always sew elastic thread in the top to stave off too much slouching.
I'm sure it's some kind of bad knitting karma to post a modeled photo of a single sock, when you know exactly what the second one will look like (or at least we hope it looks something like this). But Fig and Plum has been so starved for knitting content lately, I just had to post this. I just feel proud for getting this far, to be honest, considering all that's been going on lately.

Why is it that all the unforeseen developments that most suck your time and emotional energy strike when you've the least time and emotional energy reserved? I wish I knew. All I do know is that I've been mega distractable lately. Unfortunately, most of my procrastination has been of the i-can-fool-the-outside-world-into-thinking-i'm-working variety, of which knitting is not a part. It's hard to convince people you're writing papers or studying for exams when you're actually knitting. It is easy, on the other hand, to, say, make proposed floor plans for your apartment and still appear to be pounding away at the old laptop.
Ah well. Maybe 'round October or November we'll see a Jaywalker, Part Deux.
Posted by jess at April 12, 2006 12:00 AM | TrackBackHang in there, Jessica! Your Jaywalker looks great - love the colours. Study hard.
Posted by: Robin at April 12, 2006 1:02 AMHey! One is better than none - your striped yarn looks so great in the Jaywalker pattern!! :)
Posted by: Laura at April 12, 2006 1:06 AMYour jaywalker looks fabulous - I love the colors of your hand-dyed even more in the sock that on the ball (if that was possible).
Posted by: tracy at April 12, 2006 4:47 AMThough hardly of the knit blogging ilk, I totally feel ya. Finishing my thesis is so destabilizing that completing the body of last Knitty's Kate the Cat with Britches - a pretty bitsy project, mind you - has me stoked. I can't wait to graduate and knit all the time and read books for the sheer pleasure of it! All of which is to say, you have a kindred spirit out in internet land.

Posted by: adelaide at April 12, 2006 5:24 AMI bet you'll have #2 finished in no time! Beautiful colors - if you ask me, you should ditch the lawyer thing and take up hand-dyeing yarn!
Posted by: megan at April 12, 2006 7:38 AMSecond sock syndrome strikes again! I've had similar problems, where I've been so ridiculously swamped and I just long to knit but can't justify it to myself because I could be getting really important stuff done during that time (although if you ask me, clothing a naked foot is important too!). I get through it by knitting a few rows during my breaks. It takes a while to get the sock done, but at least you get a little knitting fix to carry you through the stressful times.
Lovin' the stripes, by the way! That yarn was totally made to be a Jaywalker.
Posted by: Sarah at April 12, 2006 8:27 AMone down and lookin' good! your strpies came out really nice. i wish mine had striped. but i still love my socks after a couple of months of wear. i'm sure that you'll be happy with yours in the long run as well.
Posted by: gleek at April 12, 2006 9:59 AMYou will triumph in the end -- with your new, rocking apartment and two sock-ed feet.
Posted by: Gina at April 12, 2006 10:09 AMsomething to show is better than nothing! love those colors! hope to see part deux soon!
Posted by: melissa at April 12, 2006 10:14 AMJaywalker looks great. I really must knit these socks! Is it just me, or did your blog banner disappear in firefox?
Posted by: Stephanie at April 12, 2006 11:07 AMLove it!! Off to a great start.
Posted by: Suzanne at April 12, 2006 11:48 AMI'm really impressed! Your hand-dyed is a dead ringer for Vesper in Meteor (an awesome colorway.) Does this mean you solved the mystery of the warping board? :-)
Posted by: Beth S. at April 12, 2006 12:04 PMJaywalker looks great, and the yarn is super impressive! I feel your pain about being distracted by knitting at this time of the term -the beauty of knitting is that you can put in an hour and see the result, unlike paper-writing or classwork, where you labor for ages without anything to show. Can't wait to see your other sock!
Posted by: HB at April 12, 2006 12:14 PMJaywalker #1 looks lovely :) I kow what you mean about life getting in the way and stealing all of the energy and emotional strength you have left. I am the queen of procrastinators and just _just_ recently managed to get all 8 of my remaining papers done just before the senate deadline. I should probably start studying for the exam I have in three days...
Take it easy, take time for yourself and you'll get through it all :)
Posted by: Heather at April 12, 2006 12:43 PMLove the Jaywalker! Now I'm really feeling the pressure - I may be the last knit blogger in the world who hasn't made self-striping sockyarn OR a pair (or one) of Jaywalkers. Hmmm...going to have to fix that.
Also, is that a television sitting in front of your yarn stash?! But yarn is so much more fun to watch! Heh heh.
Posted by: Amanda at April 12, 2006 12:55 PMHi from Austria! Such a beautiful Jaywalker, I love the colors - and hey, you'll see, #2 will be done in no time, I'd take a bet! Have fun knitting it!
Posted by: Dipsy D. at April 13, 2006 4:39 AMGorgeous Jaywalker! My favorite part of that pattern is how slim it makes my ankles look. :)
Posted by: Chris at April 13, 2006 11:07 AMKeep on truckin'!! Your sock looks great. Just stare at those cheery colors when you need a lift! So bright and pretty. I would wear those with open-toed sandals, like Birkenstocks, to show them off...and I even hate wearing socks with sandals! These would look good though.
Posted by: Julia at April 13, 2006 5:04 PMI just realized that in the first picture it looks like your foot is waving hi. You know, in that driving down a country road kinda way where you only raise the first two fingers of your hand off the steering wheel.
Posted by: Amy in SC at April 14, 2006 3:37 PMHave to love the first picture. I think I like the toes better than the sock (is that a mean thing to say? I do love the sock!) The pattern does look nice I have to agree. and I love your site :)
Posted by: Katy at Pomelo Pleasures at April 15, 2006 10:46 AMI like the Jaywalkers. I just made a pair myself and they are great. They turn out so cool when used with the self-striping yarn.
I received my first loan when I was 20 and this supported me a lot. However, I need the student loan once more time.
