His Dark Materials Trilogy

No knitting progress to speak of, and less progress than there should be on my main Spring Break task, work on that dastardly "A" paper. But I am on break after all, eh? I spent most of all of today greedily reading the entire last book of the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman, which I picked up on Chris' recommendation at exactly the wrong time.

Here's a bit more information on the series from Wikipedia. Like The Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark is Rising, and Harry Potter to an extent, it was intended for children and young adults but speaks just as clearly to adults. It's more similar to the Narnia books than to HP in its heavily philosophical tone, and the writing is more complex than either HP or The Chronicles of Narnia. Of all those series it's most similar to The Dark is Rising, which I adored as a kid. On one hand it's an intelligent and complicated response to Lewis, but most of all it's just a damn good story.

I'll be thinking about His Dark Materials for a long while, and can't recommend it enough.

I read this within the last year, stumbling upon it in BnN, cause of the covers.. yeah well thats how i look for books okay!! lol dont judge.. hah

LOVED those books and the end uh!! omg!! soooooo good.

if you adored those I highly reccomend The Lost King by margeret weis, its fairlty hard to find now even though its not old, but you can get it used on amazon for cheap. Buy the set of 3, they are soooo good and worth it!! A little more sci fi then those dark books, but the underlying story, UH! I could re-read them a million times!

That's a series I've been thinking about reading. Thanks for the recommendation! Is the writing as dense as the Susan Cooper books? I remember thinking it was a bit slow at times too.

i feel soo passionate about these books. like i need to raise their awareness throughout all minds and worlds. i see these stories soo clearly in my mind. what places and sights and amazing inventions. i just want to keep living in them. hooray!

I definitely need to reread them. And you've reminded me that I loved The Dark is Rising - I should reread those, too.

I am so glad I can read while I knit, or I'd have a rough time, since I love both activities so much!

I love this series, though I've yet to read the third one. I may need to reread them and finally find out what happens

I just finished reading that series a few weeks ago! My husband had read them and insisted I do too. We like to get each other to read books we like so we can talk about them together. Honestly I wasn't expecting to like them but I enjoyed them so much!

I don't read and knit very often. I do most of my reading in the bathtub. Yes they get soggy and warped but I just looove reading in the bathtub.

I love the audio recordings too--they have a full cast and it's just awesome, very vivid.

I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I finished that series a few years back...and it was a great discovery indeed. They don't seem to get the same word-of-mouth as Narnia, Harry Potter, etc., but are definitely in the same class!

Glad you found them!

thanks for the recommendation! i love good books and love it even more when someone feels passionate enough to write about them and recommend them to others. i've put them on my amazon wishlist (inevitably, i end up buying everything on my wishlist for myself if it's not christmas or my birthday!)

i loved both the narnia books and HP books so it sounds like it's right up my alley.

i *loved* the dark is rising when i was little - such a great great series. and yeah, pullman's books are really good too. yay for kid's lit!

;)

I LOOOOOOOVED the Dark is Rising series - I reread it a few months ago and enjoyed it just as much. I'll have to check these books out!

I LOVE that series too!! Gorgeous book set!

I read the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy back in high school and I LOVED it.

I'm concerned about the movies they're making based upon them, though. Even if they don't massacre the story, there are a lot of elements that could lend themselves to looking fake - CGI daemons, for one. Most books should just stay books.

De-lurking to add my enthusiasm to the reviews of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. A friend recommended it to me last year, and I read them all one after the other. I hated to see the series end. Now I'll have to check out "The Dark is Rising."

I have been in love with these books since I picked them up 7 or 8 years ago when I was avioding school work. You are making me want to re-read them. I keep hearing rumors about a movie which I think would be either amazing or total crap but I am hoping for the former. Glad you enjoyed them.

Just have to add that I also LOVED this series. I think I'll go read them again. :)

Me too - loved those books - way better than HP. Any suggestions for something else to read?

I should check this series out... it sounds really nifty! And you've inspired me to re-read the Dark is Rising series since I haven't read it in years.

ever since i read this trilogy about 5 years ago, i have had a constant longing for a daemon... pullman nicely balances lewis' chronicles for the less judeo-christian worldview. try lewis' space trilogy for some more good reading. yum.

Ah, I picked up this series as a recommendation from Glitter a couple years ago. So good!

Posted by: Vanessa at March 20, 2006 11:00 AM

Whoa--I just found this series myself, and spent the morning obsessively reading The Golden Compass while the knitting sat ignored. Now I feel the need to check the next two books out of the library NOW, so that nobody will beat me to it and make me wait two weeks.

*Beware Spoilers*

OMG I cried for 3 days when I finished that book. 3 days! And was in mourning for many months. And I studied in Oxford, England and one day, when wandering round the Botanic Gardens, I found a tribute to Will and Lyra by a bench and that brought it all back.

Very good books though, and if you're not quite as silly as me, I completely recommend them.

I loved this series too- haven't heard of the Dark is Rising before- thanks for the tipoff- I must check it out.

Posted by: di at March 23, 2006 4:35 AM

I adore that trilogy. I've read it over I don't know how many times.

I agree with you about His Dark Materials, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark is Rising, and Harry Potter. Also I agree about His Dark Materials being most similar to The Dark is Rising, which I have loved since I was a child.

Well, aren't I agreeable?!

I read the 1st 2 in 2000 & picked up #3 within the last year - I should probably go back to 1 & 2 before diving in to #3 - I really liked the story.

"His Dark Materials" is one of my all time favorite sets of books, and Philip Pullman is one of my all time favorite authors (The Lockhart Trilogy is phenominal, and is one of the few stories in which a female is shown as a strong character with will and determination.) My only beef with The Dark books is that it took so long for them to be published; I read them as they came out, and the third book took an extremely long time to be printed.

I, too, found myself thinking about the story after I'd finished, and still think about what my own daemon would be. The stories within the story had me wishing everyone I knew was reading it along with me simply because I wanted to talk to everyone about it!

(I'm glad you read them and liked them!)

I love love LOVE those books. I got into them when I was in a children's lit class for grad school and one of my classmates was using them for his term paper. I picked the first one up out of curiosity and immediately got hooked. I've been meaning to reread them recently, but I know once I start I will be completely useless because I'll be so into them I'll ignore everything/one else. Must fine a good chunk of time and dive in!
