Oh, and while we're in advice mode, I've got a question for you New Yorkers out there. Can you recommend a good place to buy a mattress in NYC? We've been sleeping on the same cheapie since 1999 and it's taking its toll on our backs. Not long ago Not Martha compiled some great resources on how to buy, but of course where to buy will be best decided locally. Sleepy's kind of sketches me out for some reason. I read mixed things about 1800-MATTRESS on Apartment Therapy and other places, including the fact that their 30-day guarantee means some of their mattresses are "reconstituted;" I guess the extra "s" could also be for "sneaky" or "skin disease" or "bed bugS."
For some reason I am highly, highly suspicious of making any major purchases like this in NYC. New York is a big place with lots of potential customers, and I'm always wary that stores have an incentive to rip people off since they'll always have a steady stream of Midwestern suckers like me to replace what would otherwise be repeat business. Plus the difficulties involved in "shopping around" when you don't have a car to hit 8 stores in one day makes it harder to comparison shop.
Anyhoo, this is all to say if you've a good suggestion for a dependable local place, leave a comment!
Posted by jess at March 7, 2006 5:51 PMToo funny! My husband and I JUST replaced our old old mattress last week. We splurged (it IS a third of your life, y'know) on a Stearns & Foster. I have hardly been able to get myself out of the thing since it was delivered. I didn't even realize how bad our mattress was until I stopped waking up 8 times every night.
Sadly though, I don't live in NYC, so I don't have any help for you there. :) But I just wanted to share that we dropped some cash on our new one and I am NOT sorry that we did. No buyer's remorse here.
Posted by: Lesley at March 7, 2006 6:37 PMWe got ours (a serta pillow top) through rockaway bedding. i hear the commercials on the radio all the time, so i think they are in NYC as well as the good ol' garden state. My advice to you - all mattress companies get different models - so if you go to a sleepy's to try them out, you can't find the same one at Macy's...and vice versa. Try before you buy. AND one more thing - most mattress stores ARE negotiable! Haggle. It could save you hundreds!!!
Posted by: Julsey at March 7, 2006 7:11 PMWhen I was still living in NY, we bought me a new mattress from Sleepy's (the one on 86th btwn 2nd and 1st). My mother actually bought another mattress from them, less than a month ago. I remember them being really nice and I don't think we were ripped off, in fact we might have gotten a bit of a discount. The mattress I have now, however, is from Ikea. I love it! So cheap! But maybe not the best option if you're looking for a long-term mattress.
Posted by: Jenna at March 7, 2006 7:35 PMI know a good place in Pittsburgh..... If you're up for an 8 hour drive both ways, and happen to own a box truck....
Posted by: Julia at March 7, 2006 7:54 PMHi, I've been lurking for some time now. Most of my first apartment furniture is from here including the mattress and they are decent and not outrageous. My mattress hasn't bothered me and I've had it for four years. It's in Chinatown, on the Bowery by Grand Street.

Good luck!
Posted by: Alison at March 7, 2006 7:59 PMI don't live in NY but I'd go to Macy's. I bought a mattress there last year. They have mattress sales all the time, and if you use your Macy's card you get another 10% discount. I bought a $1500 mattress for $799. Check it out.
Posted by: rachel at March 7, 2006 9:58 PMJessica,
SLeepys is sketchy! My family and i have had sooo many problems with them (on top of that they were sued by the NJ AG for "among other things, sold defective products to consumers, failed to deliver merchandise as promised and made false or misleading representations in advertisements." Rockaway bedding was sued by the NJ attorney general as well previously for "selling defective merchandise to consumers and engaging in fraudulent advertising."
Personally the third time around (in 10 years!) last year i used 1800mattress. I went to the store (in East hanover, NJ) tried them out. Went to the competition, got the coil counts, materials, etc. to match, went back and not only was the price comparable, the one i chose was lower, and they knocked off a little extra. Delivered next day, no hassle. Plus they sell these great mattress covers that are waterproof and sooo easy to clean (made in USA).

Posted by: teri at March 7, 2006 10:20 PMtemperpedic swedish miracle foam whatever you call it - FANTASTIC - not cheap - but AMAZING
i'll have to search again for the link - but there is a company that makes something very similar and has all the research and can make one side more or less firm depending on if you and your bedmate have different preferences - they tell you all about latex foam and memory foam and the different weights and densities and so on - i'll try and find it an send it along
Posted by: michellenyc at March 7, 2006 10:20 PMOh should mention i have major back problems and so a good mattress is a really big deal for me. (I have special pillows, etc.)
Do research online first. If the salesman tells you that harder is better for your back. RUN RUN away from the store (heard that from a guy at a Levitz)... The best mattress for your back is one that you are most comfortable on and that will hold its shape. Make sure if you are not getting a bedspring that it won't void your warranty (a trick sleepys likes to pull - not telling customers even though the manufacturer of some say otherwise).
sleepy's may sketch you out but almost EVERYONE i know in the city has bought a mattress there and loved it. go figure..
yeah, rock rock rock rock rockaway bedding, rockaway bedding yeah!
;)
i don't even listen to the radio anymore but THAT little jiggle will be with me till the day i die.
Posted by: gleek at March 7, 2006 10:50 PMwhen i lived in brooklyn, i bought from 1-800-mattress and was really happy. i got a good deal, a great mattress, they delivered (and carried it up to my fourth floor walk-up with no complaints!), and removed my old mattress. It's always hard to figure out what to do when you can't really physically shop around (I was on a super-duper budget, too), but i was pleased with the route i took...
Posted by: jennie at March 8, 2006 9:58 AMIf you lived in or near Philly I'd send you to Sichel Sleep Products (http://www.sichelbed.com/custom.html) - they make mattresses. The first time I bought from them, I was 16 and we needed to have a box spring built for an antique bed frame. I wandered around the warehouse until I found THE comfortable one and that's what they made me. 15 years later I called them up and they still had the measurments on file for a replacment. When I traded up to a king I called them up and ordered the same thing, but bigger.
Super nice people, great product and no more expensive than a mattress store (well, depending on what you order). If they don't deliver to NY, look for a manufacturer not a retailer.
Posted by: Juno at March 8, 2006 11:11 AMwhen i lived in the 'slope i bought a mattress from the sleepy's on fifth ave (near 12th st.) and had no problems with it. mattress was fine, delivery no problem, price seemed average.
Posted by: heather at March 8, 2006 11:13 AManother vote for Macy's. good sales, reputable company, delivery/setup. I make all of my giant hard goods purchases there whenever possible.
Posted by: gretchen at March 8, 2006 11:28 AMI live in Queens and recently bought from 1800 Mattress and had great service. I ordered it during the day and it was delivered that night. I bought a nice serta with a pillowtop and I've very happy with it.
Posted by: Bex at March 8, 2006 12:25 PMSorry, I don't have any recommendations! A friend of mine in Atlanta is a meeting planner and he helped launch a new $10,000 mattress in Las Vegas for Sealy's. I know we spend like half our life in bed but that is ridiculous! The top even zips off so you can wash it - I will not gross you out with the statistics he told me about WHY we should wash our mattresses. ICK. Good luck!
Posted by: amanda at March 8, 2006 12:45 PMEw, thanks for the heads up about the "reconstituting" with 1-800 MATTRESS... I've been thinking about using them recently and now I know I won't.
Posted by: Casey Goldsmith at March 8, 2006 1:02 PMYet another vote for Macy's. My cousin bought her new bed from there and so far so good. A few months later and it still has the new bed smell!
Posted by: Ali at March 8, 2006 6:06 PM1-800-Mattress is the way to go. I've purchased 4 beds, no problem. If you don't like the one that is delivered to you, you can send it back and request another one. Delivery is fast too!
Posted by: Saleknitter at March 9, 2006 12:11 AMI got my old bed at the Sleepys on 5th Ave and 12th Street in Park Slope. The guy was relatively nice, and I was able to bargain with him to get the price I wanted for the bed I wanted. I think they're fine, and would recommend them.
Posted by: Megann at March 9, 2006 8:50 AM4th or so vote for Macy's here. My friend who lives in Brooklyn bought her mattress there a couple of months ago and she says "wait for a sale. i got a full set for $300. Sealy. it was an extra $50 for delivery but they got there quickly and set everything up"
so that's her word on it. hope it helps :)
Posted by: kristen at March 9, 2006 2:35 PMI've bought from Macy's and 1800MATTRESS with excellent results from both. I went to Macy's on 34th and the 1800MATTRESS on 35th or 36th between 8th & 9th Avenue. I just bought my current mattress in September and it is a Sealy's. The agent at 1800MATTRESS was really friendly and I never felt I was getting the run-around. I would definitely wait for a sale. I bought mine during the Labor Day sales and got a great deal for around $800 + delivery and they took my old mattress away. The delivers even came when they said they would!
Posted by: Delica at March 9, 2006 3:16 PMMacy's mattress department - when they're having a mattress sale - you can do really well price-wise and they always have discounts if you have/sign up for a Macy's card. And go for the pillow top - it's completely worth it!
Posted by: Rebecca at March 9, 2006 8:13 PMHaving had bedbugs (world's worst experience,) I would say to be wary of both 1800 and Sleepys. My exterminator suggested IKEA, because they don't take back old mattresses, nor do they remove them for you. Just a thought.
Posted by: bedbug worrier at March 10, 2006 12:06 AMI would only use IKEA if you were keeping it for 6 months and had a back of steel. It's not a adviseable solution. Did your exterminator say WHY he wouldn't recommend 800-mattress. (SLeepy's i've had problems with. My parents have had to return - and pay fees on - three beds that were the wrong bed, delivered horribly late everytime. After 6 months of it, they gave up, called the credit card company and then ran to Select Comfort (which they love). With mine, they also delivered wrong was horribly late, and a year later the whole middle section collapsed. They did nothing. Hence why i went somewhere else. My guestbed room mattress is from JC penny. The first one that came had a slight tear that was dirty it was such a hassle getting them to exchange it. Took two months. And they charged my card FOUR times for the mattress. Every two weeks there would be another charge. I would be concerned about going to Macy's because as a company, its a mess, Its horribly mismanaged... HAve you ever had good staff at Macy's ? Maybe some of you had but every single time i'm in there i ask myself "how are they still in business?"
Why dont you call the NY AG office and see who they haven't sued?! or call the better business bureau.
ACk my memory has gone! Its a week of finals i tell you.... call KATZ FURNITURE http://www.katzfurniture.com/ , on the LES. I think they carry mattresses... I got my couch there. I picked out my couch locally and called them up, send them a pic of the couch in the store and they gave me less than the local (NJ) stores were charging. (it was on referal from my parents who have dealt with them in the past...)
Posted by: teri at March 10, 2006 10:01 PMI live in NYC and I recommend www.raymourflanigan.com (The closest one to NY is Yonkers).Prices are comparable to Sleepys, delivery is very quick and they take your old bedding away. We bought from them a couple of months ago. I previously purchased a sofa from Raymour--they are a great company, higher quality than Macy's and very reputable. They have Stearn's & Fosters and many other good brands.
Posted by: Debra at March 18, 2006 2:41 PMMy friend in NYC just bought a bed from Leviz. It was supposed to be new. The exterminator had to be called out for bed bugs. The bed was infested. A "brand new bed". $1000. She called the BBB and they said that they had over 300 complaints about bed bugs. Who is an honest supplier of beds in NYC. Kathy
Posted by: kathy boles at April 30, 2007 12:11 PMI used 1-800-mattress when I first moved to NYC. Four years later, a spring started coming through the top. I looked under my mattress pad to see what the problem was ... and saw another cover on top of the original cover to the mattress! It was REFURBISHED!! I wouldn't buy another 1-800-MATTRESS if my life depended on it ... especially in these days of bedbugs!
Posted by: martini at May 1, 2007 11:03 AMDO NOT BUY A BED FROM MACYS.
I DID AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't buy a mattress from Sleepy's. I just had a whole bout with Bedbugs in our mattresses from them and they offered me nothing in return other than an employee discount to new mattresses. Now I ask you, if you got mattresses from a store and they had bedbugs in them would you buy from them again??
Posted by: Charles at October 15, 2007 2:57 PMgo to Long's , where my guy worked for a number of years.it's a family owned biz, and are wonderful to deal with......written up in NY Mag, and they have everything, including organic.....service, service, service..........
Posted by: Ellen Colon-Lugo at June 9, 2008 11:02 PMDon't buy boxsprings from Sleepy's because we bought 4 and we found bedbugs. Don't trust Sleepy's because they have low prices. Don't let the "Sleepy's for the rest of your life" fool you. Sleepy's is the worst company for "The rest of your life".
Posted by: annie at July 21, 2008 4:48 PMI just came from Sleepy, they are creepy. At first it seemed fine. The sales person had me try a bunch of beds. I told him I was just stopping by briefly on my way to work. He was pushing the hard sell. I did not even decide on a mattress and he kept saying in a low secret voice, "I can call my boss and get you a good deal" that's when I wanted to leave. Then he told me I should leave some money to put down on a mattress even if I don't know what one I want, that I could come back and decide. Very creepy! This was on Delancey Street, Lower East Side.
Posted by: hilary at December 2, 2008 4:28 PMbought my 10 yr old son a new bed because we redid his room like outer space. 6 weeks ago to the date. he wakes up the other night and tells us theres a bug in his bed. low and behold he was right. damn thing was infested, the bed went out the window along with everything else from his room. i am going to sue them! garbage that sleepys is!

The home loans are essential for people, which are willing to ground their career. As a fact, that's not hard to receive a financial loan.
