Go Here. Go Where?

Some random tidbits elsewhere on the internets you simply must check out:

  • joyoliviamiller.com - My dear friend Joy Olivia, who also happens to be a talented graphic designer, has redesigned and jumpstarted her blog. Today's she's got a winsome entry on vintage valentines, with links for extra valentine ogling potential.
  • Holly's Irregular Rib Raglan from Loop-d-Loop - This is the first one I've seen knitted up and it suits her gentleman companion with absolute perfection; he's much less disturbing than the model in the book!
  • Esther Williams Hat and Vesper Kneesocks - Two unique finished objects by the truly chic Veronique. Don't you think she wears that hat super well?
  • Cupcake FAQ - an illuminating Q & A on the world's cutest food with cupcake master Chockylit.

And lastly, a question for you: not that I need to spend more time in front of my computer, but my non-craft-related internet reading has been whittled down to quite a small swath recently (right now it's basically down to the NY Times online and Go Fug Yourself. how embarassing.). What are your favorite non-craft related internet haunts?

Check out www.aldaily.com - Arts and Letters Daily - they link to 3-5 articles from all over the web every day, and always find fascinating stuff I otherwise would have missed.

Oh, cupcakes! Thanks for the sharing the find. I've got to go bake some for my valentine right this minute!

Cheers!

Very narrow swath here: www.nationalreview.com

I have a feeling that the commenters' links are going to be just as interesting as the ones you posted - I think I'm going to have to check back later today. :)

Wish I could add something unique and interesting myself - I've been doing the opposite though lately, getting *more* involved in the craft-based internet reading (broadening from just knitting).

However... the mommy blogs and IVF blogs are fascinating reading sometimes:

www.suburbanbliss.net
www.alittlepregnant.com

Not news or debate, but a glimpse into life that an unmarried, non-mother doesn't typically know ANYthing about.

for gossip, there's nothing better than http://trent.blogspot.com

I also like to haunt the Real Simple website because it has awesome recipes and good links to shopping.

I love your Lady Eleanor! I never considered that pattern until seeing yours and Veronique's. I'm not much of a stole/shawl person either but yours looks so nice as a scarf. As far as places I visit, my online time about evenly divided between knitting sites and a site for my favorite college basketball/football team (University of Kentucky). It's a pretty unusual combo, one female dominated, one male dominated but I'm hooked on both.

Oh man, thanks for the "go fug yourself" link...I can't help but love making fun of the uber rich and trendy.

I love me some National Public Radio. I'm one of those chumps that actually gives them money during their beg-a-thons. And I like to check in on Threadless and spend money I don't have on T-shirts I honestly don't need. I bought this this night, actually. Oh, well. . .

Anyhoo, Happy V-Day!

thesuperficial.com and amalah.com are two of my favorite non-craft sites.

www.bloggingbaby.com
www.popgadget.com
www.wired.com

Have fun!

Oh, thanks for the link Jess! I check www.scrubbles.net religiously.

Matt always finds the best -- and most interesting -- pop culture stuff.

Blog reccommendations:

Waiter Rant
Tequila Mockingbird
Girl Genius
Post Secret

Nothing like an exercise like this to make me realize what a large proportion of my fave links are knitting blogs! I thought I'd have a lot more reccommendations.

Happy surfing!

If you like gofugyourself, check out www.idontlikeyouinthatway.com Lovely snarky gossip. Yay

My favorite non-knitting, non-intellectual sites are celeb gossip. defamer.com is one and the other is egotastic.com they have everything before star, people etc. Yeah, be careful if you start checking them. It can get addictive.

I like to salivate over the swag at mightygoods.com and thinkgeek.com

Posted by: Jolt at February 15, 2006 8:51 AM

Hmmm, I posted a comment here yesterday but it's not showing up. Let's try this one more time. . .

I love me some National Public Radio. I browse around and see what interesting stories I'd missed out on during the day. I'm actually one of those chumps that give them money during their beg-a-thons. And I especially love their online program called All Songs Considered. I've discovered some great music through them.

And speaking of great music, I love checking in on this mp3 site called Said the Gramophone. They have excellent writers and they chose songs from a whole array of genres.

And I am a T-shirt lover and I always check in at Threadless . I spend way too much money I don't have on T-shirts I don't need. Seriously, I'm pretty sure like 50% of their revenue comes directly from me.

As you can see I am quite the link enthusiast. Aren't you so sorry you asked? ;)

Get well soon!

DesignObserver.com and Kaliber 10000 (k10k.net) because it's all about design (your friend Joy probably knows these sites already).

For non-knitting political fun, I really like Shakespeare's Sister.

I've been into mcsweeneys (http://mcsweeneys.net) for the past few years...very funny, well-written stuff! The Lists archive has some great stuff for when you're bored and want a good laugh(check out this one: http://mcsweeneys.net/links/lists/19TimWeinmann.html), as do "Open Letters" and "Michael Ian Black is a Very Famous Celebrity".

Since I'm kind of limited in the kinds of sites I can frequent at work (I avoid blogs like the plague lest the Man get the idea that I have one and come looking...), I stick to the BBC's news site, Phillyist.com ('cause I'm in Philly), and ask.metafilter.com (which is surprisingly fascinating).

Posted by: kira at February 25, 2006 9:20 AM

Whoops! I just remembered that a new site I'm digging is dresskevin.com. It's random, to say the very least.
