Your Opinion Matters!

Today was the last day of the last fall semester of law school I'll ever have. Reminds me of something Chris' dad likes to say to waitresses when they ask him how his food is: "This is the best one of these I've ever had!"

My wonderful Criminal Procedure professor ended class today with a sweet little speech full of good advice, but the best thing about his talk was that he acknowledged the fact that all law students (some more than others, I would add) leave law school with lower self-esteem than they had when they started. Some day, he assured us, we will be confident once again. Cold comfort?

And while we're on random topics, here's one Dena and I discussed today: College students in the late '90s were apathetic but not apolitical. College students now are apolitical but not apathetic. True? Bullhockey? You decide (seriously, I'd like to know what you think!)

Now, on to the knitting content. This is my friend Jolt:

jessholt2

She is getting hitched next spring, and I'm making her a Birch shawl (here's Felicia's beautiful Birch) to wear at the reception. Her dress is white-white, and she's a porcelain-skinned Englishy colored kind of gal with blue eyes hazel / greeny eyes "blue/grey with hazel at the center. My skin is white but with a little yellow to it." <-- In her own words... how am I supposed to know what color her eyes are when she describes them like this? Huh? ;-)

We're using Rowan Kidsilk Haze or Kidsilk Night and collaborating on color choice, and she has consented to hear what you have to say as well. She's awful cute, so I thought I'd show you her photo next to each color under consideration:

jessholt2

jessholt2

jessholt2

That last yarn is Kidsilk Night, which has a bit of sparkle to it. I also kinda cut out her hair purposely, since the ends are redder than her hair au natural. And on color theme, the reception will be a very colorful Mexican-type thing, so color-wise, anything goes.

So that's it. Preferences among these three? (No new suggestions, please... it's taken us a while to whittle the field down to these!)

Congratulations on completing your penultimate semester!

My coloring is nearly identical to Jolt's. I say absolutely not the gray. I would prefer blue to green, but not that blue, it's too light and too bright. I vote for a slightly darker and slightly duskier blue. If, and only if, you're going to disqualify write-ins, I will say the green.

Posted by: Margot at December 7, 2005 11:08 PM

I think I like the blue the best, but I have to ask whether there's any sort of color theme to the wedding that we should also be matching?

And, don't worry, your confidence WILL come back - I'd say after a year or 2 of practice.

Posted by: blondie at December 7, 2005 11:10 PM

i love the green. the other colors seem to wash her out (though, that could be my monitor ...), plus that green just sings, "spring wedding!"

Posted by: jane at December 7, 2005 11:20 PM

My top choice is green and then the grey. Grey would be my top choice if it were lighter and more silver like. Is it like that in real life?

Posted by: yahaira at December 7, 2005 11:44 PM

As a fair skinned blue eyed person, I vote with blue. I like the green better, but blue tends to look better, green can turn me green too.

Posted by: ellie at December 8, 2005 12:00 AM

Congrats on being 5/6 done with law school classes! I'm a former law student myself, and while I don't think I left law school with less confidence than when I arrived (though that was probably true of 1L year), law school is, in a word, empowering.

As for the Birch, I, too, have similar coloring to your lovely friend. Absolutely not the beige-y grey color -- it does nothing for us. Blue is the most fail-safe choice to flatter the coloring, but I agree that maybe not quite such a bright baby blue. Greens can be tough -- depends on how they reflect off the skin. The right green would be beautiful, but you only need to go a little wrong with green to end up looking sickly. That green looks like it might be just right, especially with her hair color.
I'm sure you've picked these 3 for a reason, but I'll offer a completely random unsolicited suggestion: orangey colors are best to make blue eyes stand out, in which case I might suggest something like Kaalund Yarns Expressions in coral (if you wanna see: http://www.getknitted.com/acatalog/Expressions.html)-- and it's gorgeous yarn to boot.

Posted by: Janet at December 8, 2005 12:02 AM

I vote green...the blue is cold and speaking as a white-white person myself the grey may just disappear or wash out her complexion.

What a wonderful gift!!

Posted by: jillian at December 8, 2005 12:18 AM

i vote for the green - it seems to look god next to her. the grey washes her out. the blue is pretty, but doesn't compliment her as well as the green does.

Posted by: ailoan at December 8, 2005 12:49 AM

I would definitely go with the green, since the blue seems too close to another really white, clean shade, if that makes sense.

Posted by: allison at December 8, 2005 12:53 AM

After reading the "Mexican theme reception" I say go with the green. My first thought was green anyway because I think Birch looks good in that color - seems like the natural choice for that shawl because I've seen it in green and it's the color I automatically think that Birch should be.

Posted by: Laura at December 8, 2005 12:53 AM

Green, I'd say, as long as it's soft with sagey, dusky undertones rather than bright and lime-y. Great gift - lucky girl!

Posted by: eunny at December 8, 2005 1:15 AM

I also vote for green.

Posted by: Angela at December 8, 2005 3:32 AM

I think blue is best for blue eyes and pale skin., maybe even a darker blue than this one.

Posted by: julia at December 8, 2005 3:35 AM

Mmm...I shouldn't have read all the comments before making mine. At first glance, I thought blue, definitely but some of the comments have convinced me that the green would be very nice too...spring wedding, mexican themed...and the green just seems to blend in a gentle sort of way...

Posted by: Sarah at December 8, 2005 4:58 AM

Green as a Birch in spring when the leaves is starting to sprout. Green because it will go with any flowers she might be wearing. Your friend look a lot like my sweet sister, who wears green beautifully.
Excellent choice of pattern!

Posted by: Emma at December 8, 2005 4:58 AM

I would go with the green, it looks really nice with her!
Great gift, btw, I'm sure it will be stunning!

Posted by: Katarina at December 8, 2005 5:04 AM

Definitely blue! I have the same colours as your friend and I am often surprised by how beautifully that exact blue brings out my eyes in a very complimentary way, when I wear it close to my face. It's like an extra dimension... Hard to explain, but I hope you get it.

And congratulations!

Posted by: Anna at December 8, 2005 5:04 AM

I agree with Margot - the blue, but it would be even nicer in a deeper shade. And then the green, but it depends on her hair. I have white skin, blue eyes and light brown hair, and I look awful in green (unfortunately), but if her hair is a bit reddish it would look nice.. ah, I don't know. But not the gray.

Posted by: Anja at December 8, 2005 5:23 AM

I am really, really sorry to say this but your professor was just being nice. There is nothing like your first few months in legal practice for lowering your self esteem. I asked my partner if it ever gets any better and she said no.

I think the thing is, though, that you just get used to it. And sometimes you have days where you feel pretty shit-hot. They make the rest a bit more bearable!

Ps I vote green!

Posted by: sarahdotcom at December 8, 2005 6:17 AM

I think the green would be the nicest, it has a bit of 'pop' to it, as the other colors are more washed out....

Posted by: Judith at December 8, 2005 6:41 AM

I vote green!

Oh, and what did you get at JoAnn's?

Posted by: Michelle at December 8, 2005 7:21 AM

I think that green would be loverly! I agree that the blue might wash her out a bit next to the white white dress...

Posted by: Sarah at December 8, 2005 8:03 AM

I like the blue with her eyes the best. I love green but it doesn't always look good with fair skin.

Posted by: Sara at December 8, 2005 8:20 AM

I vote for green! So pretty.

Posted by: Jenn at December 8, 2005 8:30 AM

green!! she looks best with green. however, it may not be my first choice with a white wedding gown, that, i would go for grey. but green will look good even after the wedding.

Posted by: blossom at December 8, 2005 8:59 AM

I like the green.

Posted by: ashbloem at December 8, 2005 9:03 AM

Wow..so many comments! I'm flattered, and pretty embarrassed. For what it's worth, my eyes are grey, with a lot of blue and a little hazel.

Posted by: Jolt at December 8, 2005 9:05 AM

GREEN. definitely the green. the most elegant combo with a white dress i would say.

Posted by: j a r e d at December 8, 2005 9:05 AM

definately the green. for coloring, theme & time of year it pops out.

Posted by: Rachel at December 8, 2005 9:12 AM

I really like the green. It looks like her coloring is much like my own and that beige-y gray would make me look like the undead. Green would pink her up nicely.

Posted by: Jenn at December 8, 2005 9:21 AM

Definitely the green. I have nearly the same exact coloring (my eyes are a little more hazel). The green will really highlight and enhance the features. The two other colors will wash her out a bit.

Posted by: Viv at December 8, 2005 9:31 AM

Either the green or a slightly darker blue.

Posted by: naomi at December 8, 2005 9:45 AM

she will look beautiful in the green! and what a lucky friend jolt is to receive the birch!

Posted by: kate at December 8, 2005 9:48 AM

De-lurking to cast my vote for the green.

Posted by: regina at December 8, 2005 9:53 AM

My first choice would be the green. If her eyes do what my daughter's eyes do, they look more like the color she is wearing. I don't think the gray will work at all.

Posted by: Elle at December 8, 2005 9:53 AM

my first choice is green especially if the reception is a mexican type thing. the blue and grey are nice but i think that they'll wash out her skin tone.

Posted by: gleek at December 8, 2005 10:17 AM

The green really seem to look best next to her. And congrats on finishing up school!

Posted by: Julie at December 8, 2005 10:38 AM

I think the blue would look lovely on her.

I'm in my last year of law school and wondering if I'll ever feel competent enough to practice...assuming I ever find a job!

Posted by: Liz at December 8, 2005 10:42 AM

Now that you have modified the description of your friends colouring I would say she is an autumn. I think the green would be perfect. Best wishes to you both.

Posted by: Anne at December 8, 2005 11:01 AM

God, I totally agree about law school, with the one additional bit that the humbling started with the LSAT/application process, and has yet to cease. On the other hand, as you've hinted, I get the sense that knowing this stuff really will contribute to greater long-term confidence, but maybe that's just a way to get through the day.

On to more important matters. I VOTE FOR BLUE.

Posted by: abby at December 8, 2005 11:13 AM

I vote blue. I think it sings and makes her delicate colors jump out. I think the warm tones in the gray/brown just wash her out, and from the picture of the green I think it does the same, though the green would be my second choice. The gray one says "beige" to me and IMHO no one should have a beige wedding.

Posted by: Anne at December 8, 2005 11:39 AM

My first instinct is the green. But the blue would fulfill the 'new' and 'blue' of that whole 'something old' addage.

Naw, still the green. :)

Posted by: Samantha at December 8, 2005 11:39 AM

the green, the green the green!!!!!!

Posted by: alice at December 8, 2005 11:51 AM

I vote blue! I love blue with complexions like hers. I think the green brings too much of the yellow in her skin out, and I think the natural/grey would wash her out, although with a white dress, a little sparkle would look very nice. What a great friend you are!

Posted by: Carly at December 8, 2005 11:53 AM

the green caught my eye first. i would ixnay the greyish one for sure.

Posted by: malia at December 8, 2005 11:53 AM

I vote for the blue. Plus it can be her something blue.... Just my two cents. :)

Posted by: Amy at December 8, 2005 12:02 PM

Count me in for the green!

I'm still waiting for my confidence to come back - and I've been out for 6 years.

I think we are taught to question and doubt themselves because, in most cases, it makes us better (or at least more thorough and detail oriented) lawyers. And also really annoying at cocktail parties.

Posted by: MeBeth at December 8, 2005 12:18 PM

Well, option two would certainly take care of the "something blue" part of things. Is there a sparkly version of the blue, or would that be too much?

Posted by: Sneaksleep at December 8, 2005 12:21 PM

My vote would definately be green.

My colours are very similar to hers, except I have gold flecks mixed into the eye colour combination. That colour blue makes me look like death warmed over on its own, particuarly if I was wearing white. Since she says that her skin has a yellow undertone vs blue, and with that colour eye and hair she is a fall. That blue is a spring. The taupe though is a good colour for a fall that one has to many pink undertones which puts it into the spring colour camp.

Congrats by the way, on your last fall semester of Law school!!!!

Posted by: Kitty Kitty at December 8, 2005 12:24 PM

Go with the green! Go with the green! Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Posted by: Jewell at December 8, 2005 12:39 PM

I think the blue on is most appropriate for a wedding but the green looks really nice too. I have a very similar complexion and eye color and I would go with a nice dark burgundy - it'll give contrast and add a little spice to the white dress!

Posted by: Marie at December 8, 2005 12:41 PM

My top pick would be the green, though I think the blue is lovely it may have too much grey in it. Are there any other colors being considered? There's a lovely teal shade of KSH called Trance that I adore, so if write-ins are allowed I'd vote for that.

Regardless of the color, Birch is always lovely - great choice. :)

Posted by: julia at December 8, 2005 1:01 PM

Vote me in for green!! It would look great with a Mexican Wedding theme and really brightens up her face. I've also seen Birch in real life in that color and it was lovely.

What a great friend you are and congrats on the last fall semester!!

Posted by: Inky at December 8, 2005 1:03 PM

i vote for the green, for being most festive and for offering the happiest contrast with the whitewhite of the dress, and the bride-to-be's lovely hair. yes.

and with regards to school and the direct correlation between it and students dwindling self-esteem... well i think that is pretty much the point. to wear you down. because the strong will survive it. they will be the ones that say oh yeah fuck you and proceed to not suck at life. its the same reason they made us take all the really stupid busywork classes as freshmen. college is all about reverse psychology but it will never admit it. don't let the turkeys get you down!!!

Posted by: erin at December 8, 2005 1:58 PM

First, the vote. 1) Green. 2) Blue. 3) Beige (although I like the idea of RKN).

Second, school. Congrats - you're near the end! My self-confidence has been shaken over the last four years, but more than anything I feel stronger as a person for having (almost) made it through a Ph.D. program. I've realized that any smart person can get into grad school, but you have to be very stubborn and tenacious to make it to the end. Somehow, I find comfort in that. Courage!

Posted by: Amanda at December 8, 2005 2:38 PM

Congrats on school!!

My vote is for green.

:)

Posted by: Caren at December 8, 2005 3:04 PM

BLUE! BLUE! BLUE! Looks like green is winning, and green is def my color, but for the occasion, I'd go with the blue... it's sweeter and softer, but both would look beautiful on her. DEF not the grey!

Congrats on school achievement!!

Posted by: patricia at December 8, 2005 3:16 PM

So... I like the green. It brings out nice red highlights in her hair in the pictures.... BUT, I keep seeing an elegant grey shawl over a white dress as excellent for a wedding (I'm in the minority, I know). And, I've seen that color of KSN in person, and its lovely - I was tempted to buy it to make yet another Birch in.

Posted by: melissa at December 8, 2005 4:28 PM

My personal fav is the grey.
I think the blue is also lovely and will play up your fair features.
I think the green is also pretty and will play off your eyes with the hazel/green-ness.
Altogether I've been no help.

Posted by: Samantha at December 8, 2005 6:01 PM

I like the blue one. Congratulations on the semester!

Posted by: Kristin at December 8, 2005 9:20 PM

Green.

Posted by: Nicole at December 8, 2005 10:51 PM

BLUE! But green would also be nice too.

Posted by: Sarah at December 8, 2005 10:58 PM

OK, I've had the pleasure of actually spending lots of time with Jolt in person, and I gotta say blue. Its the eyes, man.

Posted by: Chanders at December 8, 2005 11:31 PM

I like the neutral one best, especially for a wedding (I think it would be most elegant) -- I know, I know, I think I'm the only one. That's okay. And if not that, then blue. It could be the "something blue" then, too. ; )

Posted by: Vicki at December 9, 2005 12:17 AM

I vote for green. :-)

Posted by: Iris at December 9, 2005 7:28 AM

Hi,
I vote for green.. I made one in the Kidsilk in that green (I think).. you can see it on my blog.. I actually made that one for my SISTER's wedding! It turned out really lovely.. but I think the green looks best with your friend's coloring.. or like someone else said earlier.. maybe a blue, but not that shade.. it's a little too bright.. a heathered bluish grey would be nice.......

Just sayin!

Posted by: Mia at December 9, 2005 3:11 PM

I like the green, too.

Posted by: hjortron at December 12, 2005 8:03 AM

Hey there -- I have colouring similar to your friend -- and if she has any yellow in her skin (as she says she does), that green (as it appears on my monitor) may make her look jaundiced. Not so attractive on your big day. The blue is a better choice, in IMHO.

Posted by: kate at December 12, 2005 12:57 PM

I have the black kidsilk night. Great yarn. I think that light blue makes everyone look beautiful, so I would go with that.

Posted by: Kristi at December 18, 2005 8:09 AM

I know you have no idea who I am, but definately choose the BLUE. It will make her eyes (with the exception of the hazel bits) stand out.
