Ballet Pullover

Pattern: Ballet Pullover by Teva Durham, from Summer '04 Interweave Knits
Yarn: Recycled Bulky Cotton
Needles: US 11, 24" circulars

I'm reserving judgment about this sweater. Sometimes I like it, sometimes it seems kind of unflattering (the center shaping adds interest; it can also add the illusion of more belly than may actually exist). It's an absurdly quick knit, though, so nothing's really lost in the process.

The only major modification is the 3/4 inch sleeves since (a) so many of you liked them and (b) laziness interfered with my ability to knit full long sleeves.

A note about the yarn: it drove me absolutely nuts, and may continue to do so throughout the life of the sweater. I don't know what this is called, but it's the kind of yarn that's just a bunch of untwisted strands, and many of the individual strands broke in the recycling process. Now they are rearing their scraggly little heads in several places on the sweater. It's easy to stuff them back between stitches, but, well, argh.

UPDATE: Ah! Commenter Sky has reminded me of one more modification to the original pattern. The Interweave version of this top (unlike the version in Teva's book) has a crochet finished collar. Being no good at crochet and predisposed to wide necklines, I left it off. Flashdance forever!

Also, if you'd like to get this issue of Interweave, you can purchase it from The Knitting Garden or a number of other shops that stock back issues.

I love it! You listened to your readers :) I just used some of that kind of bulky cotton with the untwisted strands for a bag. It hurt my hands trying to keep the needle in the right place, and not spliting the yarn. The sweater looks gorgeous on you. Great job!

I think it's great and looks terrific on you!

I think this is beautiful - it seems to fit to a nicety, and the 3/4 sleeves make it dainty and light, I guess. I LOVE that open neckline.

I love it, looks so great on you! This is one of the great things about blogging - you (or me!) see something you've wanted to make on another blog, it looks great, so it's off to the stash to find the right yarn! Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I love the fit and the color. But I agree with you that the center shaping is a little...I don't know, distracting? But it still looks great on you!

I think it looks great! I love the color and the 3/4 sleeves. I tried this sweater with DB Cashmerino Superchunky and it was just too heavy (and I got that weird stomach thing, too).

hi jess, i think the ballet pullover is gorgeous, especially the color!! i really prefer the longer sleeves than the short sleeved version on teva's book.

that color is really great, and i think the shape is flattering. i don't think there's any belly illusion at all! love the scoop neck and 3/4 sleeves.

Ooh! I really like it! I have this in progress and am unsure about how it's going to look as well, but seeing it on you makes me want to finish. Great job!

Your sweater looks terrific! I like the colour and it looks good with the strappy straps. The 3/4 sleeves look like they belong and I think the sweater is quite flattering.

I just love it. It looks great on you, and there doesn't look like there's an extra belly thing going on, though I have heard that from others who have made it. Its still on my list, and seeing how fast you did it is making me want to just start mine!

I think it looks wonderful! You inspired me to do the short-sleeved version. And, um, I don't know what belly you think that shirt is creating.

Hello, I found your blog through my sarching "Simply Marilyn" project. I like your Ballet pullover! Like Marilyn, I usually prefer oversized one but I like the shape. I wish I could have Summer04 Interweave Knits! Your project' colour looks little wider than the original. Did you change it little bit?

Unflattering pshaw! It looks beautiful!!! Great job - gorgeous knit.

It looks great on you! The center shaping does not bother me, but perhaps it would be less distracting with a dark camisole underneath?
