Pingouin Cotton Ribbon Yarn for Asana?

I received 6 balls (about 480 yards) of Pingouin 100% cotton ribbon yarn in a trade a while back. It's a relatively narrow but thick/sturdy ribbon yarn - a bit like knitting with thin shoelaces.

It would be lovely for a summer knit, and when I saw Asana from the Spring Knitty, I thought it would be perfect. All Seasons Cotton is aran, my yarn is aran... But then I made a swatch and the gauge was off by a whole inch. When I switched to larger needles, the stockinette seemed to work to gauge on size 9s, but then the garter-rib was quite holey on the 8s (and since this is the boobage area, I'd rather avoid holey).

Should I just use the needles called for and make the top in one of the larger sizes? Would that work given the complicated construction in back, or would the proportions be off? Should I give up hope of using this yarn for Asana? Is there something else I can try? I've never worked with a ribbon yarn like this.

knitting with the needles and making it a bigger size could go pear-shaped. i haven't actually tried it yet, though so i'm not an expert.
could you try making the x-back top also in spring knitty? maybe you could use those proportions and needles and modify the pattern so that it has a similar back to asana. though that might be more complicated than it is worth.
never having used ribbon yarn before i can't direct to any patterns.
all the best though

I'm not sure either. Ribbon yarn creates a different fabric. The only thing I've used it for was a small purse. It was frustrating because it's so easy to tear the yarn--my needles kept ripping into the center of the ribbon. It wasn't a problem, but it might be on a garment.

I found this post because I googled Pengouin. I have had 6 skeins of a funky red/orange color and 1 skein black. i bought them on NYC in 1980 something. I have knit and frogged 3 tomes over the year. While on a trip to Macon, GA found a cute Reynolds Cabaret baby sample sweater knit up and it reminded me of the Tricotine. I bought the pattern and passed on the yarn. Good move. The sweater maybe a keeper! Look for Cabaret patterns. I found quite a few. I'm using #9 circlar INOX needles.
Good knitting!
