What Color Should We Paint the Privy?

bathroom1.JPG bathroom2.JPG

This is our bathroom. Recently, our dear landlord FINALLY hired someone to come in and reconstruct (sort of) the walls, which were crumbling and oozing some kind of foamy wall-filler substance. It has been painted a moisture-resistant but harsh, harsh white.

I'd like to paint the white over with something more stylish and friendly, but the problem is, we have this salmon-colored tile, pictured above, and no windows. That's where you come in. Oh tasteful, color-savvy readers of Fig and Plum, what color should we paint our bathroom? Please weigh in. Thank you.

Periwinkle. Definitely.

hmmm... I would go with a nice blue-green color... go to the home depot, and get like, a million paint chips... get a couple of each so you can tape them together to make a large enough patch that you will be able to know if you can live with it.... then...away you go.

I'm a fan of eggshell grey. It's just a light, simple, warmish grey.

I personally like orangey pinkies paired with green. Like a light lime green. =)

I'm another person who'd do green with that color. I'd go for a ferny green or a light pea green. Something light and springy to give it a fresh look.

have you considered yellow? it's a lovely color for bathrooms!

I'd go with brown. Rich, dark, slightly reddish brown.
Or maybe eggplant.

Hey kiddo, here's where you can put that copy of Photoshop to good use. Select the wall area using the magic wand selection tool, then make a new layer to try some new paint colors on the fly. For a more realistic view, set the layer to "multiply."

Good times. :)

something tells me ms. narcoleptikov speaks from experience. i don't think my yellow bathroom could ever compete with yours, jp.

that's an awesome idea, joy. i wish i could do the photoshop thang - malheureusement, my copy of photoshop elements is a thing of the past since i got my new 'puter, and i'm too broke to buy another copy.

now, as to the actual color, i too lean toward green. my question about green is, though, will it make me look green in the bathroom mirror? will i look at myself each morning and think "i don't feel like i'm going to vomit, but the mirror tells me differently"?

hey jenny -

have you ever thought of starting a blog about your apartment rehab? you have so many good ideas, and you're always so eager to get advice, and that might be a great way to get disinterested opinions. not that i'm not a disinterested opinion. anyway. people love manhattan apartments.

Jess, I have a green bathroom (you can say I'm a bit partial to the color...), and it doesn't seem to reflect the green all that much because of the other colors going on (shower curtain, cupboards, etc...). I'm thinking the warmish tile colors will counter any sort of ill-effect of reflected green...(I hope, anyway!)

I say PLAID. Definitely plaid. You can do it, Jess! Using your existing color palate of how-you-say Salmon, black and white (so you don't get nauseaus every time you enter the loo from too many colors) tape off your white walls horiztonally and paint random combinations of colors in big and little stripes. When it's dry remove the tape, tape off other stripes running the other way, and do more stripes. When it's all done you'll have a very groovy plaid bathroom. I think. Or just use some rubber stamps (just think--another whole craft project making your own stamps!!) and cover that white paint with lots of neato stamp designs.
