My friend Clayton just moved from Boston to a rustic hut in Maine, where he'll be starting an apprenticeship in organic farming. I don't think he'll have electricity, running water, and stuff, but he's okay with that. In fact, it sounds a little like what he's looking for.
Now, I might be wrong, but I think it's pretty darned cold in Maine, so I wanted to send Clayton something warm for the winter. So I ordered this convertible mitten pattern from Patons [Naked Sheep offers free shipping!], which seem like they'd come in handy up there. Knitty also has a convertible mitten pattern, but it's made with sock yarn instead of worsted weight like the Patons, and I'd like to finish these before next summer.
Posted by jess at October 12, 2004 9:11 PMhi! i just got this pattern book, too. i was wondering what you thought of the needle recommendations? it says 3 1/4 mm (us 7) and 4mm (us 6). however 3 1/4mm is actually a size us 3 and 4mm is actually us 6. and then tension says to use the 3 1/4mm needle (would that be the bigger or smaller one to them since they list it as 7 and 6, repectively? i know you just need to get gauge but i am substituting and just wanted to know for future reference. the patons site does not have an email where i can contact them. i'd love to see a picture of your mitts sometime. i just started mine. and you can make the tip rounder by just doing a knit2tog in regular intervals instead of the k2tog with the psso.
:)
Posted by: thuy at November 11, 2004 2:02 PMyes, this is so confusing! someone down at patons needs to learn how to do these conversions. i e-mailed the place where i bought the pattern and she suggested a 5 for the cuff and a 7 for the rest. i used a 5 for the whole mitten and am very happy with how that turned out.
the larger needle is only used for one wee bit of the pattern (the hinge for the flap). I used a size 7 for that.
thanks for the rounding tip, too!

Do you mean doing k2tog instead of the combination AND eliminating the alternating knit rows?

I opine that to get the business loans from banks you should have a good motivation. But, once I've got a commercial loan, just because I wanted to buy a house.
