Beyond Marks & Spencer

When I lived in England, I remember reading somewhere that shopping, right behind football, was the national sport. It seemed to be true - the High Street of the tiniest towns, even in quiet Canterbury where I lived, overflowed with Topshops and H & Ms, milliners and tailors, knick-knacks and Boots pharmacies, not to mention floods of eager consumers. The one thing that seemed nowhere to be found back in 1997 was nice underwear designed for the under-60 set. Nothing but full-cup nude-colored stronger-than-the-Brooklyn-Bridge bras and equally unflattering knickers.

It amazes me how quickly things change. First Agent Provocateur and now Myla, which just opened a shop here in Manhattan (albeit on the friggin' Upper East Side - the UES' first sex shop! Scandal!), have thrust the Brits to the forefront of high-end lacy lingerie, certainly outpacing the U.S. and (gasp!) even the French, IMHO. Of course, I can't afford any of it, but my hope is that these British companies opening up here will push the Victoria's Secrets of the world in their direction - less padding, more variety, and way more ba-da-bing.

That's it for your undie update. Hope I haven't made anyone blush ;-)
