WHY oh WHY can't American yarn companies write hipper patterns? The new Phildar Summer 2004 catalog includes a ton of cute tank top ideas (my favorites: #473, 477, 478... but mon dieu what possesses the French to consistently come up with stuff like 479? The world may never know.) using their unusual yarns - et ils sont tout en francais! Now I'm willing to slog through French cognates all day long, but I wonder: is the knitting shorthand the same, at least? Has anyone tried using a French pattern before?
Posted by jess at May 10, 2004 9:39 PMI don't think it's that difficult. In fact, if you already know some French (and it seems you do,) and you know how a knitting pattern works, it's not difficult just a little tedious. Just use this dictionary of knitting and crochet terms for the specifics.

I love Phildar patterns. They are so much fun and the French really know how to make a sweater fit. Good luck!
